Whew! It's been a year since I started writing here in my blog. After 365 days, 50 posts were shared or a cool average of at least 4 spots a month. This day was a celebration but also a time to remember the 1st year death anniversary of Francis Magalona. May your soul find peace now man!

This coming season, I wish to create more exciting, funny, unique and senseful posts for you.

Humanap Ka Ng Panget of Andrew E, Orig Or Copy?

In the early 90's, rap music became an instant hit among Filipino music lovers. During this time that the likes of Francis M became a byword and his songs caught our attention. Another rapper finds his way to the hearts of Filipinos. Andrew E became an overnight sensation with his debut song in 1991, "Humanap Ka Ng Panget", topping the charts. Music stations frequented with requests to play this song which catapulted Andrew E to the mainstream of music scene.

This song was his gateway to success as he also penetrated the showbiz world with one hit after another.

I can't disregard the fact that I also admire him with his wit and humor injected in his songs. But just recently, in Mo Twister's blog post, Oh No Andrew E!, the secret behind the hit song "Humanap Ka Ng Panget" was revealed. Many said that it was already became an issue before but nobody really cared. But after seeing the video of Cash Money's song in 1988 entitled " Find An Ugly Woman", I too had second thoughts if Andrew's song is really original. The melody and the lyrics were almost identical that you might say that Andrew E's "Humanap Ka Ng Panget" was the Tagalog version of "Find An Ugly Woman".

Academy Forever In My Memory

Transferring from one casino branch to another is not new for me. From my assumption in work in 2002 as a Surveillance Monitoring Staff, I've been with 5 different branches through 2007. When my position was dissolved in the later part of '07, I was given a chance to work in Corporate office, a dream for any Pagcorian, for that matter.

I now had to throw away radio and forget about acting like a cop. I must now learn how to operate computer, prepare training materials and do monthly inventories. So much about banned personality. Welcome to Asian Gaming Academy!

When I first set foot inside the spacious room of AGA, I didn't know what to expect. I'm not used to converse in front of audience. I don't have any idea on how to teach or facilitate trainings. Lo and behold, I was given a job, which from the beginning of my interview in the selection process, that I honestly didn't like. But I had to learn the ropes of being a Training & Development Clerk. From preparing training things, requisition vouchers, job requests, monthly inventories to coordinating attendance of staffs, in & out of documents, name it, a clerk should know it. That is on top of filling in the absence of driver and messenger.

But I do have a great time working in the department. For one, It made me realize that I can do office work. Working under time pressure and deadlines made me perform better in such circumstances.

Also, working in Corporate became rewarding for many reasons. First, there's no work during Saturdays and Sundays. You can also enjoy long week-ends because of Holidays. A shuttle bus will ferry and fetch you from work to your house. You will not feel the 10-hour work because you can always find time to relax in between hours.

Aside from all this benefits I experienced, my stay in the Academy was worth looking back.

I will forever remember the people I've worked with inside AGA. Sir Arnold and Mam Dolly, who opened the door for me here. Mam G.I., for being kind all throughout my stay. Jeff, for being so generous in many ways than one. My break time buddies Sir Dennis and Tolits. Jun, for being a good friend whom I can give my trust. Didith, same blood running in our veins. Sir Boyet, for the letters, advices and knowledgeable conversations. Liza, for the never-ending follow-ups. Jane, for being such a nice girl. Sir Jets, for being cool. Sir Boni, for his kindness shown in many occasions. ThezDa, my classmate in BPA. Julie, just learn how to relax and don't take work so serious. Ma'm Cookey, for believing in me. Sir Rick, also for being so generous. Sev, for me, still remains as my friend despite the misunderstandings that happened. Tekla, I consider as one of my bestfriend, someone I can open up. And of course, Doc, for teaching me how to get credit cards and obtain loans (but I consider my very good friend).

As I embarked to a new journey in life, I will forever be grateful to AGA for accepting me in. I may have a lot of shortcomings but I can honestly say that I performed, the best way I can. My decision to leave was not just for the sake of my family but also for my own personal growth. I always believed that God designed the course I had to take in life. It's now my call how to find it.

How Sweet It Is!

Ahhh.... finally.....a college degree I can be proud of!

Last January 27, 2010, I received my diploma as a degree holder in Public Administration. I walked with pride inside Justo Albert Auditorium of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Almost 3 years ago, PLM opened it's doors to undergraduates working in the government through their Distance Learning Program for the Degree of Bachelor in Public Administration. Luckily, our agency, PAGCOR, is one of those granted to be part of this along with other government entities like the Manila City Hall among others. Upon knowing the program, I quickly grabbed the opportunity and took the entrance examination. More than a hundred passed the exam so PAGCOR decided to put up 4 sections, me in section 1, ehem!

February, 2007 was our first day in class. A memorable first subject, Intro to Public Administration, which is a requisite to continue the whole course. Mr. Osido, our professor, was a perfect baptism of fire for us. He not only made us listen but also study harder which I can attribute to his teaching style.

Along the way, I started to feel the load and difficulties I'm going through. First, I had to sacrifice my day-off, which is a Sunday, to attend the class. Second, I had to finished my assignments and research works while doing my job at the same time during breaks in office hours. But the most, I believe everyone in the class would agree, is the memorization. For me, it's just a thing of the past. Memorization is already a distant memory!

Subjects involving numbers like Intro to Accounting and Taxation 1, made me scratched my head a lot.

Outside the two, everything was just easy for me. Public Fiscal Administration, Government Planning & Control, Urban Development Process, Management Information System and even Human Resource Management presents topics that interests me. Everyone in the class is cooperative & participative that made the discussions very interesting. Though we laugh on some classmates with favorite lines like Sir Lito's " what is ironic", we learn a lot through the exchange of ideas coming from different experiences shared in the class.

Also, a lot of memorable events took place or classmates leaving funny memories. I will forever remember, Mr. Delgado's coffee & fish offering to our professors. Mr. Benedicto, who's always the first to pass his paper during examinations. Mr. Tiquio's Wanders tickets. Our resident attorney, Mr. Lagabong, who mesmerizes all of our teachers. Mr. Calingasan's story as a retired Army. Ms. Evangelista, who was voted as the most beautiful in the class. Mr. Del Pilar, asking for our payments. Ms. Tuazon's nervous recitation. The ultimate "pasaway" in the class, Mr. Coronel. And of course, Mr. Global crisis himself, Esteban Mora.

This diploma I received not only symbolizes the course I've finished but my dream to be a good example for my children. Maybe, I committed a bunch of mistakes before but that doesn't prevent me from realizing my goal in life. Time is never a problem. Age is never an obstacle. Money is never an issue. What all of us just want is to finish what we've started many years ago.

Ooppss, My Kid is Growing Up!

Seeing my eldest daughter, Kyllie, preparing herself for her near graduation in grade school on March, made me think that I started to really aged. I’ve observed a lot of changes on her for the last couple of years. She can now wear her moms dress. Her feet is exactly the same as her moms size 6. She just want to stay in the house rather than go with us. Before, she asked P 10.00 to buy candies and chocolates, now she asks money for her cellphone load. But the biggest reason of my realization is when she asked her mommy to buy “modess w/ wings”.

I can’t help but remember all the stuff she did as a young kid. Blessed with dancing skills, she always perform in fiesta in our place. She dance impromptu in her school. But her biggest or shall we say, the highlight of her showbiz (?) career happened when she was 5 up to 7 yrs. old.

She had a lot of VTR tests before landing her first project, the Clusivol commercial. The said commercial also produces a space in newspaper and a billboard in MRT station. 3 paychecks in one project, not bad! Next came a starring role in Jollibee, TeenOlympics, toys included in Kiddie Meals. She was chosen among 100 hopefuls for the role. A separate audition was held for the role of her mother wherein the main requisite is to look similar to my daughter. Super Ferry project was a better one since the shoot will be done on board the ship going to Cebu. At the same time, the contract is much better than the first two.

Breaking in commercial stints, she now auditioned in Little Miss. Philippines in Eat Bulaga. I personally went with her in Broadway Centrum and what a nervous feeling I experienced! Talent is not a problem, my concern is the question and answer which she did quite well. She won the daily round but was not that lucky in the monthly finals.

A modelling opportunity knocked on her which we quickly grabbed. Touring SM malls, they modelled Disney Princess stuffs, from dress to toys. A great experience since all the kids that were part of the show where known commercial models.

She also joined the EVER Kiddie Star and made the final cut. She eventually lost in the final selection where the winner is the relative of.... never mind.

She was also engaged in some print ads, appeared in the sitcom Quizon Ave. and played as one of the students of Sharon Cuneta in the movie “Caregiver”.

Such a colourful childhood life for my first daughter, any kid would wish to have. At the moment, she seems to lose the appetite for lights and cameras. I just want her to focus more on her study and give emphasize on personal growth.

I knew that she already passes that stage but on a sad note, I realized that I started to get old. But in a very fruitful way, so to speak.

One More Glimpse In 2009

Whew... in just 9 hours and 40 minutes, 2009 will say goodbye and the year of the tiger will enter. A promising 2010 is just within reach. But before we officially put year ’09 in the archive, let’s made a final glimpse on the year that I can describe as equally momentous and ghastly.

Tears, terror and triumph summarizes the year that was.

Our country greeted the year 2009 with the abduction of three Red Cross volunteers in Mindanao, probably a prelude of things to come. Nine months after, Father Michael Sinnott was kidnapped in Pagadian City though released after only a month.

One of the most talked-about news in the first part of the year was the suicide of Trinidad Etong, wife of the famous newscaster Ted Failon, inside their house. Different versions of her death were speculated and we saw how QCPD made a feast out of the celebrated case.

Known as “The Master Rapper”, Francis Magalona died last March 6, after a long “Happy Battle” with leukemia. He was expected to take part on the most anticipated concert in 2009, “The Final Set” of the Eraserheads in Pasay City. But before he passed away, Kiko managed to make a collaboration album with Ely Buendia known as the” Sickos Project”.

Another controversy that became so popular and probably the most talked about not only on television but also on cyber space was the Katrina Halili- Hayden Kho sex scandal. Kho’s penchants for recording his sexual acts with his girls were documented. A senate inquiry was lunched that resulted to the revocation of his doctors’ license.

Richard Gutierrez met a vehicular accident in Cavite City in May while driving his car. His long-time P.A Nomar Pardo was thrown out and was later declared dead. The family of Pardo filed a case against Richard after the settlement issue among both parties.

After disappearing in 2 years, Ruby Rose Barrameda, sister of actress Rochelle Barrameda, was found inside a cemented drum along Navotas river. The primary suspect of the gruesome murder was his strange husband belonging to the influential family of Jimenez.

The world weeps as Pop Superstar Michael Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion and died last June 25. His death was a big surprise since MJ is preparing for his final concert tour dubbed as “This Is It”. Jackson’s memorial was witnessed by 31.1 million U.S. audiences comparable to the 2004 burial of President Ronald Reagan.

Another popular figure died a month after. Former President Corazon Aquino, the mother of democracy, succumbed to colon cancer. Her funeral lasted 8 hours passing through the streets of Manila, Pasay, and Makati to her final resting place in Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City.

On the same month, Executive Minister of Iglesia ni Cristo, Ka Erano Manalo also passed away in his home at age 84. A mausoleum was built in INC Tabernacle beside the bronze statue of his father Felix Manalo.

The Arroyo government faced another controversy when National Artists protested her latest inductees. Past National Artists rallied signifying their objection in naming the likes of Carlo J. Caparas in the prestigious award.

Last day of July was a big day for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as finally, she met face to face newly elected President of the United States Barrack Obama.

In GMA 7 program Unang Hirit, Presidential son Mikey Arroyo was put into the hot seat when Winnie Monsod questioned his net worth. His houses in U.S. and other assets were also mentioned.

The arrival of former Senior Superintendent Cesar Mancao in the country signalled the re- opening of the Dacer-Corbito double murder case. Senator Panfilo Lacson, who was inflicted on the case made a damaging statement about the alleged involvement of former President Joseph Estrada prompting Senator Jinggoy Estrada to retaliate.

The worst typhoon to hit the country enters the Philippines area of responsibility in the night of September 26. Typhoon “Ondoy”, devastated Metro-Manila, pouring a record-breaking rainfall in just several hours. Not only town were submerged in the water but also cars and houses. Ondoy left P 11 billion in total damages and 400 persons dead.

Still recuperating from the Ondoy tragedy, Typhoon “Pepeng” followed next. Pepeng swept Northern Luzon. Making the matter worse is the opening of the gates of several dams making the flood rise higher and quicker.

Two couples decided to exchange “I Do’s” this year. Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos had a private wedding while Mar Roxas and Korina Sanchez shared their wedding day with the victims of Ondoy.

Romeo Jalosjos and the Aquino-Galman suspects were granted Executive Clemency in November and March of this year, respectively.

November 23, will forever be remembered as the day were 57 people were killed in the Maguindanao Massacre. Primary suspect Mayor Andal Ampatuan was arrested pointing to the election as the cause of the brutal killings. 12 days after, the Arroyo government declared Martial Law in the whole province sensing that a government take-over might take place.

Two sea tragedy hog the headlines in December while Mayon volcano was in the news for the entire month.

2009 was good for Philippine sports particularly in boxing. Described as the Golden Age in Boxing, this year produces several champions in the squared ring. Manny Pacquiao won his unprecedented 7th title in the same number of weight class putting him on top of other celebrated boxers in the world. Boom Boom Bautista, Donnie Nietes, AJ Banal, Brian Villoria, Nonito Donaire and Ana Julaton were some of our World Champions this year. Phillippines placed 5th in the just concluded Southeast Asian Games after winning 38 Gold medals.

These are just the events that took place in this action-packed 2009. On my personal experience, this year is one of the worst I’ve been through, family-wise.

Great expectations are waiting for the coming year. Let’s greet 2010 with open arms and bury the bad memories of the past.

Wishful Thinking at 33

For the past two years, there’s no celebration or whatsoever on my b-day. November 30 is just too close to my sons December 9th b-day that I would rather spend for him. Just forget about the usual gathering I had in the past or beer drinking session with my friends. Sorry guys!

With the evolution of our surroundings, from El niño phenomenon to climate change, I considered myself half dead at 33.

In this time, where a possibility of computers taking over the whole world, the last of the Moses clan is nearing its end.

In spite of this, I’m still very optimistic of my future not only for myself but for my family. I list down some of my simple dreams. Some are weird while some can be achieved.

Let’s browse down;

1. A tour around Liverpool England where my favourite band Beatles originates.

2. A courtside ticket in one of Cleveland Cavaliers game (of course to had a closer look at Lebron James).

3. To do a documentary about how the less fortunate people go through their everyday life and expose how much politicians earn during their term in office, illegal money in particular.

4. A conversation with former Senate President Jovito Salonga.

5. To own a 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo.

6. One night with Megan Fox.

7. A visit to Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, California.

8. A spot for me to write in Sports Illustrated.

9. To undergo training of Navy Seals, as they say is the best in the world.

10. To be involved in manhunt operations against the ruthless criminals in the country like Gov. Ampatuan.

11. Ghost hunting at Manor Hotel in Baguio or Corregidor.

12. Dive into the site of the wreck of Titanic.

13. A premier ticket of the movie Toy Story 3 (for my son).

14. Jamming with the Eraserheads (double wish, indeed).

15. One on one with UFC Brandon Vera.

16. Trek the summit of Mt. Everest.

17. To be part of a sitcom like Palibhasa Lalake.

18. To drive the LRT train, he,he.

19. To have lots of money to be given all over the country.

20. To be a model of Bench.

21. A day with idol Michael Jordan.

22. To be an agent ala-007, not Johnny English.

23. To be a respectable lawyer.

24. To participate in the oblation run.

25. To meet my childhood friends and former classmates.

26. To see my kids continue the values we inherited from our grandparents.

27. To ride a roller coaster which is one of my fear.

28. To perform in Talentadong Pinoy.

29. To build bridges and buildings.

30. To learn magic tricks ala David Blane or Chris Angel.

31. A poultry down South.

32. A big jump from a helicopter.

33. To be a director even for a short film.

I still thank God for who I am in spite of the many shortcomings I had in my entire life. Thank you Lord, Thank you for the blessings.

Case of Legitimacy

Okay, so much has been said about the latest victory of Manny Pacquiao, an 11th round TKO against Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto. We already knew what happened and almost all newspapers dissected the match from the opening bell. Experts made their blow by blow account of the bout dubbed as “Firepower” which gave us an in-depth look at the bloody match.

On my part, I want to give a little observation or something like a study of Manny Pacquiao's date with history. Aside from being heralded as the “Pound for Pound Best Fighter” in the world, he became the first boxer to win 7 titles in 7 different weight divisions.

Today, I will give my own analysis on how legitimate Pacquiao’s 7 world titles are.

ARE ALL 7 TITLES OF MANNY PACQUIAO LEGITIMATE?

Nowadays, an average boxing fan got lost because of the influx of titles or champions in every division. I myself was having a hard time figuring out what is real and what is not. I still have to compare my observation among the different perceptions of boxing gurus.

Here we go!

1. WBC Flyweight Champion (1998-’99)

In December of 1998, Manny Pacquiao knocked-out Thai Chatchai Sasakul in 8 rounds to win the WBC Flyweight title. Sasakul got the title from Yuri Arbachakov, who was regarded as the top flyweight at that time. When you beat someone who defeats the recognized #1 guy, it means that you are now the guy. Pacquiao’s belt in this division is indeed legitimate.

2. IBF Super Bantamweight Champion (2001-’03)

After losing his flyweight title, he now moves 3 divisions higher, passing the 115 & 118 lbs. He then fought reigning IBF Super Bantamweight Champion Lehlo Ledwaba and knocked him out also. Ledwaba was toting a 33-1-1 record and was regarded as a classy and talented fighter. I would say that Pacman second title is very much legitimate.

3. Ring Magazine/ Universally Recognized Featherweight Champion (2003-’05)

When Manny beat Marco Antonio Barrera in November of 2003 in 11 rounds, no title was at stake. But Barrera was the Ring Magazine Featherweight Champion at that time. Barrera locked his lofty position by beating WBC champion Erik Morales in a rematch, but he refused the belt. In this situation, we indeed ignore the rightful sanctioning bodies. Though some quarters might debate, the title that Pacquiao took away from Barrera was recognized in the boxing world.

4. WBC Super Featherweight Champion (2008)

After a bloody loss to Erik Morales in 2005, Manny had a string of victories. He downed Morales twice, repeated over Barrera and a stand-off with Juan Manuel Marquez. The two, Pacquiao and Marquez, met again this time at the 130 lbs. level and Pacquiao won the controversial fight. Despite the intrigues, we can’t argue the fact that Manny was the best Super Featherweight from 2006-’08.

5. WBC Lightweight Champion (2008)

This title is the one many experts might find debatable. David Diaz was considered as a strap holder of the belt, a description given to a champion whose claim was a bit shaky. Diaz won the “Interim WBC title” by beating Jose Armando Sta. Cruz, and was later named the organizations champion when “regular” champion Joel Casamayor was stripped. Despite Manny Paqcquiao’s masterful demolition of Diaz, many might prefer him to beat Casamayor to be considered the best Lightweight. This is still not including the unified titlist, Nate Campbell. I may also have some qualms about this particular issue but to conclude, Manny still beat a formidable champion who has a legitimate belt.

6. World Junior Welterweight Champion (2009)

No dispute probably in all corners after the 2nd round stoppage of Manny Pacquiao against a long time Junior Welterweight champion Ricky Hatton. The Hitman was a Light welterweight since his pro debut and enjoyed the claim as the best in the division since beating Kostya Tsyzu. Pacquiao’s 6th division belt was certainly a legitimate one.

7. WBO Welterweight Champion (2009)

The quest for the historic feat ended after Manny Pacquiao destroyed bona fide welterweight champion in Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto. Despite the fact that WBO was not that prestigious as the WBC diadem, the boxing world thinks that Cotto was the best Welterweight, with apology to Shane Mosley.

In summing up, Manny’s accomplishments were a staggering feat. By beating the best in every division he conquered, Manny Pacquiao is now in the same page with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard. Maybe even better!

Remembering Philippines Most Wanted

Alvin Flores was gunned down last Oct. 29 in Compostela, Cebu. Many recognized him as the modern day outlaw in the long line of Philippine's Most Wanted personnel. His underworld career began in late 80’s when he became an alleged recruit of Alex Boncayao Brigade in Malabon area. He later create his own gang, named after him saying, “Someday my name would be famous”.

It was said that Alvin Flores Group was barely mentioned in the media but in the criminal world, they began to be noticed. But on that fateful day in October, his luck rans out.

Like I’ve said earlier, Alvin is just one of the most feared bandits, the country ever saw. Today, I will intorduced 3 more, who wreck havoc in the country.

Late 1940’s, Manila resembled a wild frontier town. It’s normal to see businessmen tucked gun in their belts as they went about their daily routines. Clashes between rival gangs were a regular occurence in congested communities of Paco, Sta. Ana, Sampaloc and Tondo.

Nicasio Salonga’s, popularly known as Asyong Salonga, criminal career flourished in these surroundings. A typical urban Filipino gangster, Asyong’s specialties were robbery, extortion and murder. But he was generous enough as he shared his prosperity to his needy neighbors. Despite his notoriety, Asyong was free to roam the city. It was said that he was protected by politicians and police officers who used him for their personal purpose.

He was killed in October 1951 by a single bullet in the head while drinking with his buddies in Tondo. He was only 27 years old.

Leonardo Melencio aka Nardong Putik was known as the Robinhood of Cavite. He was loved by the farmers in his hometown and was remembered for restoring peace and order in the community he controlled.

It was believed that Nardo wore an amulet that protected him from bullets, but only if he were standing on mud when he was shot at. He acquired the amulet from another Cavite mythical outlaw, Tiagong Akyat.

Throughout his violent career, he was associated with powerful politicians. He was in & out of prisons that forced former Senator Justiniano Montano to call for a full Senate inquiry into the Manecio case.

On February 10, 1971. Nardong Putik would again grab the headlines. This time he was accused of gunning down two anti-narcotics agents of National Bureau of Investigation. Months later, another team from NBI would end his career permanently. NBI agents engaged Nardong Putik in a gun battle. His car was raked by gunfire and 60 bullets were counted on his body. The NBI team that Nardong Putik encountered was led by an agent named Epimaco Velasco.

Benjamin Garcia or Ben Tumbling was only 23 when he was shot and killed in an ambush set-up by police operatives led by Intelligence Chief Vicente Vinarao.

Ben Tumbling, who hails from Malabon, derived his nickname from his earlier job as a movie stuntman. An expert in karate, he was said to have incredible acrobatic abilities, a talent helped him make quick getaways from arresting policemen.

It was said that Ben’s hatred with police started with a traumatic brutallity he experienced. He was heavily tortured by arresting policemen as a juvenile delinquent. His head was hit hard by a chair, dunked in toilet bowl and his genitals electrocuted. Reports said that all this torture might have forgiven by Ben but what drove him for really hatting policemen of Malabon was when some of them raped his young wife.

He was later involved in robberies, car jacking and drug trafficking. In a matter of months, 7 policemen were shot dead, their guns taken from them. Because of this attacks, Ben Tumbling was now high up on the police’s “Most Wanted” list.

Malabon Police were now afraid of him.

Ben’s friends and neighbors received gifts from him. Those in dire needs suddenly received cash from him. It is easy to see why poor communities of Malabon saw Ben Tumbling as a hero, not as a criminal. When he was shot dead by policemen on Friday the 13th of March 1981, poor people of Malabon wept openly.

Surely, a life lived like one of them was a life we didn’t envy at all. As the saying goes, Someone who live by the bullet dies with a bullet. This was not written to highlight their wrongdoings or give justice to their acts but understand that criminals were also human but unfortunately made a wrong turn somewhere in the course of their journey in life.

Extending Gun Amnesty

The Philippine National Police extends the registration of loose firearms or those with expired license up to the end of November. The program will benefit those gun owners who haven’t renewed their license for more than a year and those who owned unregistered firearms.

There are several reasons regarding this Executive Order No. 817 or the so called governments intensified campaign against loose firearms. One of them is to legitimize loose firearms and at the same time make a full account of all firearms in the country. Another reason is to reduce the chance of using loose firearms in election related crimes which will derail the realization of a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral exercise in 2010 election. Also the program wants to prevent or eradicate private army that causes widespread turmoil particularly in the provinces.

According to PNP report, there are 1,110,277 loose firearms scattered nationwide. 15,676 of them are with the threat groups while about 5,276 are with the criminal elements. Almost half of the total unregistered firearms are with the general population. On the other hand, National Secretariat of the National Firearms Control Program said that 15,394 loose firearms were registered since July 1, 2009, the start of the amnesty program.

PNP is also alarmed in the increase of crimes involving persons using untraceable guns. Lately, minors were also involved not just in petty crimes but in big-time syndicate. Reports showed that 97% of the crimes involve the use of loose firearms.

The Alvin Flores Group, who gained notoriety by using S.W.A.T or PNP designed uniform, also uses high-powered firearms. They were reportedly part of Kuratong Baleleng Group who decided to carve their own identity. The shoot-out in Greenbelt 5 was their last stop before they were gunned down in Cebu City.

In the past, there were also cases of gun pointing which led to shooting in busy streets in the city. The latest incident involves ABS-CBN reporter Sheryl Cosim in Congressional Avenue last Nov. 2. A certain Richard Ordonez stepped out of his car and points his gun to the surprised Cosim. Ordonez car had a plate no. 8 used only by Congressman. After verification, the PNP discovered that he also had 7 licensed guns.

Let’s help PNP in its drive to lessen the criminality that may still take place using an unlicensed firearms. Let’s be part of the information drive about the extension of gun amnesty program.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto 24/7, A Must See

HBO made its premiere telecast of Pacquiao vs. Cotto 24/7 last October 25, 2009. Last Sunday, the 2nd part of the instalment was aired and different reactions and observations were handed down.

I personally watched the first 2 parts and I also want to impart my comments on what’s happening on both training camps.

Let’s examine first Team Pacquiao. 24/7 started showing the devastation caused by typhoon Ondoy in Baguio City, the site of the training camp of Manny Pacquiao. Because of the bad weather, they had to make several adjustments in their accustomed routine. Conditioning coach Alex Ariza made Manny swim in cold water in lieu of his morning jogging because of the rains pouring heavily in Baguio. Distractions are everywhere from the people wanting to have a glimpse of Pacquiao to the television shows he attended. HBO also showed how Manny disobey the instruction of Freddie Roach not to play basketball. The rift seems to escalate in Pacquiao camp as Roach and Manny adviser Michael Koncz continue to argue in several issues. Even Ariza had a run –in against Koncz, proof that there’s a real animosity going on in Team Pacquiao. As new typhoon Ramil moving in north direction, Freddie Roach was so concerned that they may got stuck in Baguio City. He talked to Manny and agreed to go down to Manila the following day. As they were ready to leave, an unexpected visitor came in. Senator Manny Villar arrived and sat down with Manny for several minutes. Seems irritated, Freddie now decided to interrupt the conversation and told Manny that they have to leave NOW.

Upon arrival in Manila, they went straight to Penalosa Gym for some work-outs. Days after, they are now on- board in plane to Los Angeles. There he was again greeted by a throng of fans waiting for his arrival. Roach is now at peace since Pacquiao can concentrate now at the Wild Card Gym.

Miles away from Tampa Florida, Miguel Cotto is busy mapping out his strategy against the pound for pound king. The show zero-in on Cotto’s relation with his family particularly with his wife and son. If Pacquiao’s camp was tumultuous, Cotto’s camp was relatively quiet. There were clips were HBO showed how relax team Cotto is by playing golf and swimming and diving in the pool. Past Pacquiao fights were keenly watch to unmask the weakness of their opponent. Unlike Pacquiao, Cotto preferred not to open his sparring sessions to the media although he gave some pictures of it. Cotto seems to be so focus and determined that fear might strike you while watching him.

Contrasting camps, similar purpose. Different strategies, the same goal. The final part of Pacquiao vs. Cotto 24/7 will be shown on Nov. 8, exactly a week before the main event.

Joys & Thrills of All Saints Day

It is always good to have a time wherein your entire family gathers together even for at least a single day. Christmas, birthdays, reunions, holy week and the coming all saints day are just some of the special occasions long-time cousins, aunties, uncles will be seen. All saints day was special because even the family member who passed away or the unseen grandparents, who were born in early 90’s, are part of the event.

Days leading to November 1, there are a lot of Halloween specials, documentary, movies etc. shown in local and cable television. Before the advent of pay-per-view and internet- surfing, I’m glued to programs like Magandang Gabi Bayan who yearly presents horror stories. Our country is known to possess haunted places that makes this kind of presentation very effective and entertaining as well.

The Diplomat Hotel in Baguio City is believed to have ghosts of beheaded nuns and priests. Malinta Tunnel in Corregidor became the haunting ground of unknown spirits in the area. UP Los Banos was a scary place on one reason alone, it was situated at the foot of Mt. Makiling. There are bridges in this place that seem to take forever when crossed at night. The famous Balete Drive in Quezon City, though despite lack of evidence, brings thrill among the motorists because of the belief that a white lady will cross the street and worse, will joyride with you.

The night of All Saints Day was not just a night of remembering lost love ones but also a night of sight- seeing and girl-haunting. Different kinds of women pass by in front of our tomb. Head-turners, mini-skirt dressers and even unpleasant-looking girls were everywhere. We also have this contest wherein we count every person we know passing by. It will be counted once he replied.

During my teenage years, I also collect used candles by circling around the cemetery. There was also an instance where I clean and paint the mausoleum of a girl I’m courting. Unluckily, still not enough to impress her.

The sight of colorful food stalls is also a joy to behold. We stroll around them and food-trip with my friends. Burgers, fish balls, squid balls, hotdog sandwich, donuts were some of the most sought after foodstuffs. We also hear the mass at night since the church is just beside the cemetery.

In my younger years, we normally go home at 12:00 a.m. but because you're thinking of the work the following day we had to pack-up as early as 8:00 p.m.

The Way I Look At Him

November 3, 2009 will go down as one of the most memorable yet, sad date for us here in Asian Gaming Academy. Our STDO, Arnold Cesar Romero will say goodbye as he venture to a whole new world.

The man we fondly called “Notty” or “Naughty” to some extent, is severing his tie with Pagcor, whom he wholeheartedly served for 7 long years. I will just pay a little tribute to the person I called friend, boss, teacher, adviser, motivator and even an idol.

The latter part of 2007 produces anxiety for me and the rest of my colleagues in Surveillance Department. Rumors are spreading about the impending disbandment of our position as Surveillance Monitoring Staff (SUMS). Everyday was like a guessing game for us. Office order arrived almost every hour sending one after the other to one department to another. I got mine also. An interview with a never- heard department in branches, the Asian Gaming Academy, awaits me. Little did I know that this never- heard would become my saving grace!

I came face to face with this young fellow I can describe as quite intelligent but, permit me to borrow the word, just an average joe. He is Arnold Cesar Romero, the departments’ Senior Training & Development Officer. Conversation runs smoothly, probably because I’m articulate enough to answer his questions, he,he. I asked him the work he plans to give me and he said “Reliever ka lang, meron talagang naka-assign dun”. What I didn’t know is that the person he’s talking about is already dead and I’m not a reliever but a replacement.

Luckily or unluckily, depending on what angle I want to see it, I was accepted for the job. I had mixed emotions the moment I step inside the AGA office. Happy because my feeling of uncertainty is over and sad because according to Mam Beth, our Assistant Managing Head, I was accepted because I was the only one who wants the job. Anyway, I enjoy my stint here in my new house. Probably one of the biggest factor is my relationship with my co-employees especially with Sir Notty. He made me feel welcome and was quickly accepted in the tribe. He made me feel comfortable in a job totally stranger to me. Several months after, he included me in his application for Sun Group Plan which is a big help for me because prior to this, all my application in post-paid plan were denied.

My first night out with Sir Notty was also memorable. We bar hop and little did I know that I was already drank in just 5 bottles of San Mig Light. I can’t remember how I reach our house. But what made it more unforgettable is that it cost me 4 days to overcome my hangover.

He was also my first boss, as I was under him for several months. There I saw how strict he was in terms of work but always willing to lend his helping hand. Money is also not an issue for him, and probably, will never be. Whenever he asked me to go out with him, I don’t have any qualms because I knew my stomach will never complain.

As the days, months had passed, I started to realize that I’m wrong. He’s not your average joe, rather he’s a special person who’s full of wisdom in mind. I can’t remember a single instance that he failed to answer my question which in most occasion satisfies me.

He’s also a good copy for those who seek insights about a particular matter. His smartness is good to emulate. I’m honest to say that I will never be a writer as good as he is.

There are probably more praises and accolades we can hear from the people he work from day 1 here in Pagcor. I’m just fortunate that I was given a chance to work with him for 2 years.

He was my boss, where instructions must be followed. He was my teacher, particularly during my second wind as a student in BPA. He was my adviser, not just on work but also as a human being. He was my idol, because you can only imitate him but can’t totally replace. He was my motivator, especially in this kind of endeavour which I truly appreciate. And of course, he was my friend, though I have shortcomings, he still extends his outmost kindness to me.

That’s the way I look at him. That’s the way I salute Mr. Arnold Cesar Romero!

Little Help Matters

Five days after the fury of Typhoon Ondoy was experienced here in our country, it seems that we haven’t gotten over it yet. I told myself that given a chance, I want to help, the best way I can. That opportunity came yesterday, first day of the month, when Pagcor asked for volunteers who will bring relief goods on affected areas. I enlisted myself and was assigned as group leader of Team 5.

I woke up at around 2:30 in the morning to prepare my things. Upon arrival at Corporate office, we were quickly briefed on what to do before and during the distribution. We were handed ropes and flashlights just in case the place requires so. We were also given plastics of foods and cases of bottled waters.

My group is composed of 5 members including our driver. Each of the 9 groups was assigned to different places. We dispatched at around 4:30 a.m. going to our first destination in Pasig City. Pineda was our first stop followed by Malinao. These places weren’t affected that much so we just inform them that they can call Pagcor if they need any form of assistance. One of our security guards is also affected. Their house is still submerged in waist- deep water. We gave them additional mineral water since we felt that they badly need clean water. Next stop is the Karangalan Village. We had difficulty finding the target area because no house number was indicated in the list. After almost an hour of circling around the area, we found a bungalow house just about half feet above the street. The owner said that almost half of their house was flooded that they had to transfer to their neighbor across them. Muds greeted us at our next destination, Midtown Village in Cainta, Rizal. According to the people residing in this place, the water was 10 feet deep that most of the houses were buried. We saw Meralco meter bases containing water inside. Model cars were dilapidated. We even saw a taxi cab turned over in front of the gate of a 3 storey house.

Before we left, a phone call was received by one of my member requesting us to save her since we’re already near their residence. We bravely face the strong current going through their subdivision. Unfortunately, only 6x6 or 10-wheeler truck can go through the raging and chest-deep water, not our Toyota Revo. We retreated back and just made a phone call to our office informing that these people were in need of rescue operation.

It was short but meaningful day for us, who in a simple way, has given our time to at least give aid and assistance to the victims. After seeing the damage cause by typhoon Ondoy in flesh, reality struck me that God can get back everything you have in a snap of a finger. In this time of uncertainty, learn to be thankful for all the blessings we got.

My prayer is for all the victims of this tragedy.

Flood in the City

It was probably the worst natural disaster that hit Metro Manila in recent memory. Typhoon “Ondoy”, left the country with a death toll of 200 and still counting. The extent of the damage was greater than what Typhoon “Milenyo” registered in 2006, which also devastated Metro Manila.

Ondoy started to wreck havoc in the evening of Sept. 25, Friday. The following day, I was scheduled to accompany my father and auntie to Heart Center for check-up but the bad weather prevented us from living our house. As it turned out, it was a blessing in disguise because traffic was starting to build up in almost all corners of Metropolis. Several hours later, the biggest amount of rainfall ever poured in the country was felt.

The perennial victims like us here in Malabon momentarily take the back seat as Marikina, Cainta and Pasig City was lured into the spotlight. The roof-deep water we experienced in the past is now happening even to the exclusive villages in the city. My cousin in Novaliches was awakened by a strong flashflood that they failed to rescue even a single cloth. He once told me “Kapag binaha kami, lubog na kayo dyan sa Malabon”. But lo and behold, water failed to infiltrate us (thanks partly to our flood control program), though our car was slightly affected.

The sight of people hanging for dear life, people walking in electric cables, people washed away by strong water current, cars tilted in a matter of seconds, sea-like underpass in Quiapo, Manila and Makati was all over the news the whole day. Just like a modern day version of The Great Flood in Noah’s time.

This catastrophe should serve as a warning that anything can happen even the most unexpected one. Everyone now must take extra precaution and prepare for the worst. If having a “salbabida”or a life jacket in your house will give peace of mind for you, get one now. Sometimes you have to think weird because bizarre things can topple even the most prepared soul.

Let’s pray for those who were badly affected by this calamity. Let’s extend a helping hand, the best way we can.

Bagsik ng Batas Militar (Huling Bahagi)

Setyembre 23, 1972, magkakasabay na operasyon ng pulis at militar ang naganap. Hinuli ang mga pinaghihinalaang kaaway ni Marcos katulad ni Ninoy at Jose Diokno. Ito ay inilihim sa publiko. Sa radyo, wala kang maririnig kundi mga awitin. Tanging mga pamilya lamang ng mga biktima ang nakakaalam ng mga pangyayaring ito. Ipinasara ni Marcos ang Kongreso, mga opisina ng pahayagan, radyo at telebisyon. Isang nagngangalang Lim Seng ang ginamit na halimbawa upang patunayang seryoso ang gobyerno sa kanilang kampanya sa pagsugpo ng mga krimen. Sa utos ni Marcos, si Seng ay binaril sa pamamagitan ng firing squad.

Noong estudyante pa lang si Marcos, sumulat siya ng thesis tungkol sa diktadurya. Ngayon, “the thesis was put into practice”.

Sinasabing bago idineklara ang Martial Law, kumonsulta muna si Marcos kay U.S. President Richard Nixon. Alam niya na ang pamahalaang Amerika ay sumusuporta sa diktador upang mapangalagaan nito ang kanilang sariling interes.

Upang masiguro ang katapatan, binalasa ni Marcos ang hanay ng militar. Pinaboran ang kanyang mga kababayan sa Ilocos, katulad ni Gen. Fabian Ver. Kalalawigan at dati niyang driver, hindi raw matatawaran ang katapatan ni Ver kay Marcos. May biru-biruan na kung patatalunin ni Marcos sa building, sasagutin daw ito ni Ver ng, “from what floor, sir?”

Isa rin sa malapit kay Marcos ay itong si Primitivo Mijares, isang peryodista na naging pangunahing propagandista ng rehimeng militar. Labas masok siya noon sa opisina ni Marcos kahit walang appointment. Nguni’t nakaaway niya ang kapatid ni Imelda na si Kokoy Romualdez. Kumalas siya kay Marcos at tumakas patungong Amerika. Doon niya isinulat ang librong “The Conjugal Dictatorship”. Dito niya inilabas ang baho ni Marcos pati ang pambabae nito, kagaya ng napaulat na relasyon niya kay Dovie Beams. Si Beams ay isang starlet sa Hollywood na gumawa ng pelikula dito sa Pilipinas na pinamagatang “Maharlika”, pelikulang tungkol sa kabayanihan ni Marcos noong panahon ng giyera. Hindi raw binayaran si Beams kaya’t nagpatawag ito ng mga mamamahayag at ipinarinig ang pagniniig daw nila ni Marcos. Hindi nagtagal, nawala nalang bigla si Mijares. Nguni’t mas matindi ang nangyari sa anak niyang si Boyet. May tumawag sa kanya sa telepono at nagsabing buhay ang kanyang ama at gusto siyang makausap. Dalawang linggo ang nakalipas, natagpuan siyang patay. Binunot ang lahat ng kanyang kuko at may 33 saksak ng ice pick sa katawan. Ang malagim na istoryang ito ay hindi lumabas sa media dahil mahigpit ang kontrol dito ni Marcos.

Ayon sa grupong Amnesty International, 70,000 ang ikinulong, 34,000 ang tinorture at 3,200 ang pinatay sa ilalim ng rehimeng Marcos.

Noong 1981, nahalal bilang bagong Pangulo ng Estados Unidos si Ronald Reagan. Nakatakda ring bumisita sa Pilipinas si Pope John Paul II. Dahil sa mga kaganapan na ito, napilitan si Marcos na tanggalin ang Martial Law.

Noong Agosto 21, 1983 ay anibersaryo ng Plaza Miranda bombing na naging hudyat ng pagsupil sa demokrasya, ang pagpatay kay Ninoy Aquino sa araw na ito ay naging hudyat naman ng wakas ng diktadurya.

Bagsik ng Batas Militar (Ikalawang Bahagi)

Agosto 21, 1971, pinasabugan ng granada ang rally ng Liberal Party sa Plaza Miranda. Siyam ang nasawi at daang tao ang nasugatan kabilang sina Jovito Salonga at Sergio Osmena III. Papunta pa lang noon si Ninoy Aquino sa rally kaya’t siya’y naakusahang kasabwat ng komunista sa pambobomba. Dahil sa nangyari, sinuspindi ni Marcos ang Writ of Habeas Corpus, ibig sabihin, kahit sino’y puwede ng dakpin at hindi na kailangang ihatid sa korte.

Marami pang pagsabog ang sumunod katulad ng pagbomba sa Joe’s Department Store. Layunin nito’y manakot at hindi pumatay. Naging suspek din sa Plaza Miranda bombing ang New Peoples Army. Ang NPA ay itinatag noong Dec. 26, 1968 ni Jose Maria Sison.

Bukod sa mga pagsabog na ito, namumuo rin ang kaguluhan sa tangkang pag-amyenda ng 1935 Constitution sa pamamagitan ng Constitutional Convention. Sa senaryong ito, habang pinapalitan ang sistema ng gobyerno, ang presidente ang may kontrol sa lehislatibo at ehikutibo, sa madaling salita ay kay Marcos.

Inilantad ni Ninoy Aquino ang detalye ng binabalak ni Marcos na isailalim ang Pilipinas sa kontrol ng militar na tinawag niyang “Oplan Sagittarius”, ang blueprint ng Martial Law. Alam ni Marcos na hindi na siya maaaring tumakbo sa pagka-presidente sa 1973 eleksyon kaya’t mayroon siyang binuong dalawang plano. Ang Plan A ay gawing Parliamentary ang istilo ng gobyerno mula sa Presidential at Plan B, ibaba ang Martial Law.

Sunod kay Marcos, ang kanyang Defense Secretary na si Juan Ponce Enrile ang pinaka- makapangyarihang opisyal ng gobyerno sa panahon ng Batas Militar. Kabilang siya sa 12 opisyal na tumulong kay Marcos sa sikretong pagpaplano nito. Sila ay mas kilala sa tawag na “Rolex 12”, dahil lahat sila’y nabiyayaan ng rolex na relo ni Marcos. Atin silang kilalanin;

Setyembre 22, 1972, iniulat sa radio at telebisyon na tinambangan ang kotse ni Enrile. Ito ay ginamit upang bigyang hustisya ang gagawing pagdedeklera ng Batas Militar. Nguni’t ito’y gawa-gawa lamang. Inamin ito mismo ni Enrile, makalipas ang 14 na taon. Nguni’t bago pa siya umamin, ibinunyag na ito ni Primitivo Mijares. Sinabi niyang bago maganap ang pekeng ambush, tinawagan ni Marcos si Enrile at sinabing gawin na ang plano. “Make it look good”, wika ni Marcos. “Baka mas maganda na may masugatan at mamatay”. Nung gabing iyon, habang pauwi si Enrile, tinadtad ng bala ang kanyang sasakyan habang binabagtas ang Wack-Wack Subdivision. Sinabi niyang nakaligtas lamang siya dahil sa kotse ng kanyang bodyguard siya sumakay. Kinabukasan, lumabas si Marcos sa telebisyon at iprinoklama ang Martial Law.

Michael Jordan, Simply the Greatest!

This coming September 11, 2009, Michael Jeffrey Jordan will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in Springfield Massachusetts together with fellow stars David Robinson and John Stockton. The honour is the ultimate recognition for somebody who revolutionizes the game of basketball and for somebody who collared every individual award any other player dreamed of having.

Michael Jordan was simply the greatest player who ever handle a basketball. Aside from his hardcourt exploits, his marketing value is indisputable. He sold millions of burgers for McDonalds and put Nike on map. His numerous endorsements coupled with a movie, thanks Bugs Bunny, only elevates his status as the most sought athlete of his generation.

Though I love watching Magic Johnson orchestrate Lakers’ showtime style of game, Jordan made me love the game more because of his innate talent and his passion to win. Rarely seen a scoring machine while playing hard nose defense will relatively ease. Another good thing about MJ is that he made his teammates look good, something that most NBA stars failed to do. Although he had some rough times with his teammates like Kukoc, Cartwright etc., it’s just part of his competitive nature to make others play with the same level as he is.

Jordan is also a good copy for sportswriters. He made headlines and was throwing one-liners that mesmerizes other people. When he decided to return to active basketball after months in hiatus, he just simply said, “I’m Back!”.

On the issue of being the greatest player ever, Jordan said, “for me there’s no such thing as the greatest player ever since we played in different eras. I don’t know how I will fare against Jerry West”. But for many, he’s the anointed one. Permit me to borrow the words of another legend Larry Bird, minutes after Jordan exploded for 63 pts. against his Boston Celtics in one of their play-offs duel. “He is God disguised as Michael Jordan”.

Thank you MJ. But most of all, thank you God for letting us witness the legacy that is Michael Jordan.

Bagsik ng Batas Militar (Unang Bahagi)

Taong isanglibo siyam naraan pitumput dalawa. Ano ang naaalala natin nung mga panahon na ito? Ito ang taon na ang unang scientific calculator ay naimbento. Si U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz ay naging unang atleta na nagwagi ng 7 gintong medalya sa Olympics. Sa taon ding ito inaresto si Beatle frontman Paul McCartney at asawang Linda McCartney sa Sweden dahil sa pag-iingat ng droga. At sa panahon ding ito, naitala ang isa sa pinaka madilim na bahagi ng kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, ibinaba ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos ang Batas Militar o ang Martial Law.

Ang bagsik ng Martial Law ay laman ng aklat ng ating kasaysayan. Masarap pakinggan ang mga kwento ng mga matatanda tungkol sa karanasan nila. Ako’y nag-aral at nangalap ng mga importanteng impormasyon patungkol dito. Nguni’t bago natin tahakin at balikan ang landas ng malupit na Batas Militar, atin munang kilalanin ang itinuturong utak nito, si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos.

Si Marcos ay isa sa pinaka-matalinong Pilipino ng kanyang henerasyon. Siya ay estudyante ng Law school at sa edad na 21 ay nasangkot sa isang kontrobersyal na insidente. Ang kanyang ama, si Mariano Marcos ay natalo kay Julio Nalundasan sa eleksyon sa pagka- Kongresista ng Ilocos Norte. Isang gabi matapos ang eleksyon, habang nagsisipilyo sa bintana ng kanyang bahay, si Nalundasan ay binaril at napatay. Ang pangunahing suspek, si Ferdinand Edralin Marcos. Napatunayan siyang pumatay at nahatulang mabilanggo ng 17 taon. Habang nasa kulungan, ipinagpatuloy niya ang kanyang pag-aaral at naging top notcher pa sa Bar Exam. Sa Korte Suprema, ipinagtanggol niya ang kanyang sarili. Si Jose Laurel ang hukom na duminig ng kanyang kaso. Nanghihinayang siya sa talino ni Marcos na hindi pakinabangan ng mga Pilipino kaya’t ito’y kanyang pinawalang sala.

Tatlong-taon nanungkulan si Marcos bilang Kongresista at pagkatapos ay naging numero unong senador. Naging Senate President din siya, posisyong tuntungan para sa mga nangangarap na maging Presidente ng bansa. Noong 1966, si Marcos ay nahalal na Presidente ng Pilipinas. Noong sumunod na taon,sa eleksyon sa pagka senador, lahat ng kandidato ni Marcos ay nagwagi maliban sa isang kandidato ng partidong Liberal, si Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.

The death of INC leader Eraño Manalo, reminds me of my experience in becoming a “kapatid”, 13 years ago. Baptism in Iglesia ni Cristo can’t be achieved in a silver platter. A rigorous but interesting 4 months (if I’m not mistaken) awaits everyone. The first step is to attend the “Doktrina” officiated by one of their “ministro”. The doctrine is composed of 25 chapters (again, if I’m not mistaken), 3 were devoted to understand Jesus’ true “form”, God or Human. I remember during this sharing where I literally ask questions about anything that comes out of his mouth. To my surprise, he answered back without batting an eyelash and I felt satisfied about his explanations. I’m the most aggressive among the participants, understandably since I’m the only Catholic in the group. Aside from attending the doctrine, you are also required to attend the worship or “pagsamba” every Thursday and Sunday. I’m attending the doctrine in local of Pasig so if I will go to different local, I need to obtain a copy of “Katibayan ng Pagsamba” as a proof of attending the worship. If my memory serves me right, you need to complete a certain number of “pagsamba” for you to pass this stage. After finishing the doctrine and completing the required number of “pagsamba”, you will be briefed on what to do during the baptism day itself. I experienced to be submerged into cold water in their mini pool which is the culmination of the whole process. It was such a great experience which also opened my mind to a lot of things. Their practice is great to emulate. As a whole, I deeply admire their discipline. There’s no member of INC who doesn’t know their customs and their beliefs. They will have to go through the same process I’ve mentioned earlier so you can expect that every member of INC knew the reason of their existence. During “pagsamba”, they separate men from the ladies to avoid any distractions. Members who failed to attend the “pagsamba” for consecutive times will be visited by the “ministro” assigned on their places. There’s no written reprimand they’ll just want to know the reason why you’re not attending the “pagsamba”. I learned to wear polo and slacks and come on time or else I can’t enter the church. The controversial offering where other sectors claimed that inside INC you are forcibly charge to give a certain amount is not true. But what I’ve noticed is that most of them save a certain amount of money to be given on the month of December, thus the so called “ikapu”.

I will forever treasure my experience becoming one of them. Although I was eradicated (tiniwalag) from the Iglesia after my failed relationship with my ex-girlfriend, which, by the way was the reason why INC was introduced to me, their kindness will forever be remembered. “Opo, Siyanga po”.

If Only He's Alive

Tomorrow, August 21, we remember the day Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino was shot in broad day light at the Manila International Airport. For those who were not lucky to witness the infamous assassination, that day change the whole complexion of the Republic of the Philippines.

Ninoy was not afraid to face his expected death. Sensing danger he told the slew of reporters accompanying him in his flight to “ready your cameras because this action can become very fast.... 3, 4 minutes and it’s over, and I may not be able to talk to you again after this”. To cut the long story short, his death paved the way for his widow Corazon Aquino to annex the highest position in the country. She was catapulted into power in 1986 via Edsa Revolution. Cory finished her 6 year term without any stain of corruption or abuse of power. The couple epitomized what the Filipino people are looking for in a leader. I remember reading a book about former U.S. President Harry Truman, whom I can described as one of the most simple and down to earth person history has ever recorded. During his term, he was invited by different corporations to be part of them but politely declined saying, “You don’t want me, but my office”. When he turned over his presidency to Eisenhower, he left boarding his car with his wife and went back home without any escort. His lone house was his only home for his entire life except during the time he was in the White House. What’s more fascinating about Truman is that when he left office his only money is his pension in army amounting to $ 112 a month.

This is exactly the opposite of former President Ferdinand Marcos who was reported to own mansions at Long Island, New York plus several high rise buildings in 5th Avenue, Manhattan. Joseph Estrada’s hidden wealth was documented by different sectors in the society who wants to divulge the true color of the man who proclaimed himself as the Darling of the Masses. Now, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was in the headlines again as her net worth increased dramatically during her term as President.

In my own opinion, there will never ever be another Ninoy Aquino. His love for his country and his fellowmen were boundless. Even though he saw his death coming, he still insists to step his foot back in the Philippines to free us from the hands of the dictator. He will always be remembered for his famous quote “Filipinos are worth dying for”. Unfortunately, the present administration retaliates saying “Filipinos are worth dining for”. Tsk,tsk,tsk, only if Ninoy is alive.

Time of Depression

It’s half of August already and I only have one (1) post here on my blog site. This is one of my busiest months particularly in my work. A hazardous month for me indeed! Add to my worries are my personal problems I had to face, a serious one at that. The condition of my auntie gave me so much pain. But I’m still optimistic that everything will be back to normal. Cory Legacy, Philippine Democracy

I was barely 9 yrs. old when the historic People Power happened in February of 1986. I was not fully aware of what was transpiring but the picture of army tanks, priests and nuns carrying rosaries and people marching to Malacanang palace were still very vivid on my mind. Several days after, Corazon Cojuangco Aquino took her oath and became the 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines and in the process became also the first lady President in Asia.

I can describe Cory Aquino as an ordinary person facing an extra ordinary challenge. Without any political background so to speak, how can she handle the country still fresh from the authoritarian leadership of Ferdinand Marcos? From Times Street to Presidential seat. From Ninoy’s shadow to executing the law. From being just a plain house wife to the highest position in the nation. Corazon Aquino defies all odds.

Her six year reign had its share of ups & downs. From 1986- 1989, Aquino faced 7 failed coup d’ etat aimed to overthrow her administration. Disasters like the MV Dona Paz sinking, 1990 Luzon Earthquake, 1991 Pinatubo eruption and Ormoc tragedy which kills 6, 000 people marred her last two years in the office. It was also during her term that brown-outs became sporadic. Despite all of these problems President Aquino faced, she received widespread recognition from all over the world. She became TIME magazines Woman of the Year in 1986. She also delivered a speech before a joint session in United States Congress which was interrupted by applause several times. She also suspended the 1973 Constitution that paved the way to the “Freedom Constitution” & the “1987 Constitution”. She also promulgated two legal codes, the Family Code of 1987 and the Administrative Code of 1987. She also signed to law the Local Government Code in 1991. CARP was also enacted to law during the 8th Congress.

Despite being unconscious of the Edsa Revolution I’m still fortunate to witness the legacy of the mother of democracy. Her husband, Ninoy Aquino once said that “Filipinos are worth dying for” Cory replied by saying” Filipinos are worth living for”.

Game of the Generals

Two major events occurred last week for Kabayan Action Group (Kasracom). First was the launching of Barangay Peace-keeping Action Team (BPAT) last July 16, ’09 at Amphitheatre in Malabon. The event was the culmination of a month long preparation made by Northern Police District for the project. The affair was well attended. From NPD Director Gen. Samuel Pagdilao, PCR Chief Col. Ferdinand Del Rosario, Malabon Chief of Police Col. Jessie Villanueva to barangay captains and kagawad in CAMANAVA. The agreement was signed by the high-ranking officials with the chairman of different volunteer groups that composed BPAT. Second was the personal invitation made by Gen. Pagdilao to Kabayan last Sunday. NCRPO Chief Roberto Rosales was upset that he failed to attend the BPAT launching that he vowed to give a little of his time to personally see the pet project of Gen. Pagdilao. A meeting was set in front of Citisquare mall in Letre Malabon. DD (District Director) Pagdilao proudly presented his BPAT (although it was our group Kabayan) to Gen Rosales. He mentioned that aside from the CCTV cameras NPD will install to various critical locations, he will use human resources to serve as eye in places can’t be covered by the cameras. Before the briefing ended, several members of the group including myself proceed to LRT station in Monumento. We work with Caloocan police led by Col. Santos in traffic management around the vicinity. Minutes later, Gen. Rosales arrived with his convoy. He talked with us and was even impressed with our uniform who looks the same as the new sky blue uniform of PNP. He even noticed our dog tag and asked how much we spent for it. 20 minutes later, Gen. Rosales left with thumbs-up sign.

Paalam, Kaibigan

Gabi ng Lunes, Hulyo 20, ako’y nagulat sa mensaheng aking natanggap mula sa isang dating kasamahan. “Pare patay na raw si Ariel”? Napatayo ako sa aking pagkakahiga. Tinawagan ko ang ilan sa mga taong alam kong malalapit sa kanya kasama na ang kaniyang pamilya. Kumpirmado. Namaalam na ang isa sa aking matalik na kaibigan.

Mula ng matanggap ko ang masamang balita, gabi-gabi akong hirap matulog. Di makapaniwalang wala na si Ariel na sa murang edad ay kinuha na ng ating Dakilang Lumikha. Pero sino nga ba si Arielito Delos Santos? Ano ba ang naging papel niya sa aking buhay?

Taong 2002, buwan ng Agosto yata ‘yun ng una kong makilala si Ariel. Unang araw ng training naming noon para sa Surveillance Monitoring Staff (SUMS) Batch 2 ng Pagcor. Palibhasa’y karamihan sa mga kasama namin ay Pagcorian na, kaming mga galing labas ang nagsama-sama. Si Ariel ang una kong nakatabi at naging kasabay sa uwian. Nataon pa na ang kaniyang kasintahan ay taga-Malabon din kaya’t mas lalong naging malapit kami sa isa’t-isa. Nagkahiwalay kami ng branch sa deployment namin after ng training. Muli kaming nagkasama sa CF-Pavilion noong 2003. Madalas kaming magkasabay ng shift at madalas ding sabay sa pagkain, nguni’t hindi sa paninigarilyo. Masasabi kong medyo may pagka chain smoker din siya kaya’t madalas tamaan ng ubo. Marami kaming pinagsamahan sa Pavilion. Magaganda, pangit, nakakatuwang mga ala-ala ang naiwan namin dito. Muli kaming nagkahiwalay panandalian at muling nagkita sa CF-Silahis. Dahil itinuring ko na siyang tunay na kaibigan, pinili ko siyang maging abay sa aking kasal noong 2005. Ngunit isang mabigat na pagsubok ang hinarap niya noong 2006. Naoperahan siya sa puso sa Manila Doctors dahil sa pagbabara ng ugat nito. Dinalaw namin siya at matagal din bago siya naka- recover. Napilitan siyang mag-resign noong 2007 dahil pinili niyang manirahan sa ibang bansa kasama ang kaniyang maybahay na si Michelle. Kinuha ko siyang ninong sa binyag ng aking bunsong anak bago siya lumipad patungong Los Angeles. Doon ay biniyayaan sila ng kanilang unang supling. Mula noon ay hindi na kami nagkita. Nagbabalitaan na lang kami sa telepono, nag- chachat sa internet at nag-iiwan ng mensahe sa aming Friendster account. Huli kaming nag-usap bago ang Reunion Concert ng Eraserheads. Gusto niya akong isama bilang isa sa mga security ng venue nguni’t last minute ay hindi natuloy. Nag text pa kami noong Pasko noong isang taon at nangako siyang pupunta sa bahay. Hindi rin kami nagkita dahil hindi siya natuloy pumasyal ng Malabon.

Nakakalungkot lang isipin na napaka-bata pa ni Ariel para bawian ng buhay. Maliit pa ang kaniyang anak na hindi na niya malalaro pa. Ang mga pangarap nila ng kanyang asawa ay mag-isa na ngayong haharapin ni Michelle. Hangad ko na gabayan ng Diyos ang kaniyang pamilya gaya noong nabubuhay pa siya.

Let the Games Begin!

Forget about the pandemic scare brought about by A (H1N1) virus. Forget about the cause of Michael Jackson’s tragic and untimely death. Forget about the possibility of poll automation in 2010 election initiated by the partnership of Total Information Management Corporation (TIM) & Smartmatic. Move over, National Collegiate Athletic Association; let’s roll the red carpet for the opening of the 72nd edition of University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

On Saturday, the eight participating teams will try to outclass each other once again in 15 sports lined up every season. Ateneo, La Salle, UE, FEU, UP, Adamson and NU attempts to break the string of 11 straight over-all championships by the University of Sto.Tomas.

I’m one of the many patrons of UAAP despite leaving University of the East in mid 90’s. I had a lot of fond memories with the sports institution that made me aware of its yearly festivities. I'm one of the 6 lucky applicants, out of 25 wannabes, who were accepted in our schools official student newspaper, DAWN. My first assignment was to cover the junior division in basketball (my wish granted). I thought covering basketball was a piece of cake. I realized that watching vehemently and waiting for outcome of the game is not enough. Knowledge in running score is a must. After several weeks, I was given a new task. This time, not just one but a handful of sports events were assigned to me. But being involved in this small organization gives me not only unforgettable experiences but privileges and advantages too. During my brief stint in news writing, I met different people in different walks of life. I had the opportunity to interview emerging basketball superstars Mark Telan and Gerard Francisco during their high school days. I also had the chance to witness first-hand the domination of Dennis Espino-led UST Growling Tigers and the up and coming play of NU Bulldog Danny Ildefonso. I went in and out of playing venues like Rizal Memorial Coliseum and Swimming pool area, Ninoy Aquino Stadium, UST gymnasium and even Bro. Athanasius gymnasium in Dela Salle Taft. Gatorade became my favourite drink since you can get it free from playing venues. From courtside to dug-out, I can go wherever I want using my Press ID. I also had a grand time talking with students from different universities where I met some new friends. As a student, being a writer benefits me a lot. My uniforms were kept in my closet because I can wear civilian clothes. I can easily have access to different colleges from U.E. Kalookan and Recto. But the biggest privilege I got is when my arnis professor in Physical Education exempted and gave me 1.25 without attending his class. After learning that he was a long-time national coach in gymnastics, I interviewed him. 2 weeks after, the article came out. He was so happy that now, many students recognized him.

UAAP’s founding members believed that student’s growth and development is not based solely on their academic stand point. Encouraging them to participate in different sports brings out their competitive nature, sportsmanship, immense talent and potential to excel in this field.

For the next 4 months we will be treated to nail-biting, nerve wracking and pulsating games only the Archer,Eagle, Warrior, Tiger, Maroon, Falcon, Tamaraw and Bulldog can offer.

TAKEN

Last June 27, was a lazy Saturday for me. Without the half month salary there’s no better place for me to stay but in the house. I went to Video City to rent a DVD movie. A certain movie entitled “Taken” caught my attention. I was interested in movies that concerns about father and daughter/son relationship.

The movie, starring Liam Neeson, was a story about a government agent, who decided to retire in the service to be closer to his 17 yrs. old daughter. He was living on his own since he was already separated with his wife and daughter. Conflict started when his daughter asked permission from him to go to Paris. He didn’t like the idea but was forced to let his daughter go with her friend. When the two arrived at Paris, a mysterious man approached them. The two teenagers were then kidnapped by ruthless criminals known for drugs and human trafficking. Neeson will now do anything to find his daughter before time runs out.

The movie was presented well since the story flows continuously. As a father, you can really feel Neeson’s anger which made the movie convincing. Though the ending was not that impressive, it’s still worth the two hours you’ll spend watching the film. I remember Denzel Washington’s “John Q” but not as action- packed as “Taken”.

Batch 1992-'93 Revisited

Last week, I bumped with my former high school mates while buying some groceries. We exchanged pleasantries and I’m happy to know that they are now successful in the different fields they chose. During the quick conversation, we recall some of our memorable moments in our alma mater, Elisa Esguerra High School, and we share the same reaction, all smiles written in our faces. Today let me accompany you to a trip down memory lane and proudly introduce to you my beloved alma mater.

Elisa Esguerra High School resides at the long stretch of Gen. Luna Street at Hulong Duhat, Malabon. It is under the direct supervision of Arellano University in Legarda Manila. E.E.H.S. was actually not your ideal school. It has about 50 classrooms “only” scattered in 3 floors. If my memory serves me right, we only have 3 comfort rooms, one each floor, situated in different areas. A small canteen, a single practical arts room, a ground that fits two basketball courts along with the number of classrooms I’ve mentioned earlier comprised our entire campus. This is probably half of our sister school Jose Rizal High School also in Malabon.

J.R.H.S was actually closer to my house. But most of my friends handpicked E.E.H.S. that persuaded me to go along with their choice. During my freshman year, which was in 1990, I’m lucky to be included in section 1 together with my grade school mates. I can described myself back then as a tamed sheep in a lion’s den. We rarely go out of our class room, except during recess, and we normally went straight to our houses. But things made a drastic change the following year. As a sophomore we are now more accustomed to the in’s and out’s of the surroundings. We also have our first taste of girls, literally and figuratively. But my fondness with these creatures was cut short when my mother died. But life must continue and I moved on with my junior year with a broken leg, so to speak. It was a fruitful year where we started to carve our own name. But nothing is more memorable than our senior year where younger students looked up to us. I became a member of CAT’s model platoon which bagged the 1st placed trophy in marching competition held in Legarda Main. For second straight year, we participated in basketball intramurals though produced negative results. It was also the year where we learned how to smoke but certainly not drugs. Several fistfights also marred our 4th year but mostly because of my very quiet and peace loving friend, Roque. I considered our batch lucky because we experienced successive Foundation days and JS proms which are not usual according to our predecessors. But the culmination of all this is our graduation which epitomize our happiest and loneliest moment of our high school days. The reality of seeing each other go our own separate ways is looming. But all good things must end. We just have to move on and curved our own destiny.

Every time I passed by in front of the now defunct E.E.H.S, which incidentally was closed four years after our graduation, I can’t help but reminisce all the good and the not so pleasant things that happened in that abandoned building. My classmates, my terror teacher Ms. Padilla, Arellano Hymn, cutting classes, passion for Beatles, horror booth, basketball and volleyball tournaments, the late Mr. Villas, CAT officers, 2x3 haircuts, NCEE exam etc. all of them became part of that important stage of my life.

Some of my friends were now in other countries, working or settling for good. Some became engineers, managers, professionals, have their own business etc. But there are also some who were not as lucky as the others. Some of them are living without permanent job, separated with their husband or wife, raising bunch of kids etc. But despite all of this, every one of us share a common denominator, that once in our lives, we walked in the cemented floor of Elisa Esguerra High School, our beloved Alma Mater.

Joining of Forces Starts

Last Sunday, June 14, the grand motorcade dubbed as “Ang Kapulisan at Mamamayan para sa Kapayapaan at Kaayusan” was a rousing success if the number of participants would be the measuring stick. Our group Kabayan (Kasracom) led the 2 hour long parade with other volunteer groups like Red Lions, CAAG, Big Dogs, Patrol 117, Guardians etc. Led by the newly appointed District Director Atty. Samuel Pagdilao, focus of the project was for the PNP and NGO’s to work hand in hand for the progress of CAMANAVA area. We will now be part of Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) which in simple term will be a force multiplier of police personnel. The task is not new with us since our group was created mainly to assists the PNP on their campaign against crime and violence, drug abuse and illegal activities.

The parade kicked off a/a 0900H. Gen. Pagdilao was assisted by Chief of Police of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela with Police Community Relations (PCR) Chief Major Del Rosario as the over-all coordinator. We then followed the planned route from Monumento circle, Mcarthur Highway, Tatawid, Tugatog, C-4 and C-3 road and back to Dagat-Dagatan. The motorcade was just a prelude to a bigger event which is the launching of BPAT. The launching might take place next month, July, if all the necessary papers will be finalized.

Last May 4 on my post “Just 2 Rounds for the Best Pound for Pound”, I’ve mentioned the name Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the probable next opponent of Manny Pacquiao. Weeks after, several names cropped up. Mayweather’s adversary on July 18 fight and Mexico’s new boxing king Juan Manuel Marquez might get his 3rd fight with Pacman, if he beats “Money”. Pacquiao’s stable mate Miguel Cotto’s name was also mentioned. But Cotto has to beat first Clottey before he gets his shot at Pacquiao. Even the name of knock-out artist Edwin Valero continues to hound him. This early June, Sugar Shane Mosley was added in the mix. He even mentioned that he’s willing to go down to 144 lbs and accept a 60-40 split just to fight Pacquiao. The long list continues as last Saturday another pretender joined the fray. The name is Michael Katsidis coined “The Great Lightweight”. Katsidis is currently the WBO Asia-Pacific Lightweight champion. The 28 year old Katsidis was at the SCOOP sa Kamayan Press Conference Friday morning where he issued a challenge to Manny Pacquiao to have a fight staged here in Manila. “I am Michael Katsidis The Great. I stand here before you named after Achilles, the Greek God from Larissa, the place of my father’s homeland. We all know the feats of Achilles as he invaded Sparta to conquer their Prince Hector. I too will do the same.

I have conquered Australia. I then have travelled to England to challenge their king Graham Earl where I was to win the WBO world title. Since then I have conquered in Las Vegas, America. I gave the people a war against Filipino Czar Amonsot, a world title fight that many will never forget. I then fought Joel Casamayor in his home country and put him through the ropes in six rounds. He got back with the help of a doctor to get back into the ring and it was my own mistake that caused my empire to fall.

I have then invaded Texas to fight their King on their home soil. Even after having a badly injured hand I won that fight. I conquered the king on his own soil and only on paper the fight was said to be different. One judge gave the fight to me and the other two from Mexico and Texas gave it to their king by split decision. I previously captained and lead the Philippines to victory when they fought for the World Cup against Mexico. I promised the Philippines I would come to their soil and I did just that and defeated their Spanish enemy. It was quite easy to put Angel Hugo Ramirez on the back foot and send him back to Spain with the roaring strong Philippine crowd supporting me in the heart of Cebu.

From my experience here in the Philippines I have had the privilege of work with many gladiators. I have traveled all over the world and I have grown in confidence. I soon knew I was ready to travel again across enemy lines to America to do battle where the King of Austin was there to defend. At all costs, Jesus Chavez would not be victorious. Not even with the help of his noblemen on his homeland, the capital of Texas.

I would invade and this time not leave a decision at the hands of their King’s judges. After seven rounds of battle, Jesus Chavez bowed his head and gracefully accepts defeat as Austin’s King has now been dethroned. I was then able to continue the path that was chosen for me, to prove my greatness.

My next move was set to conquer all of Mexico and fight their King, Juan Manuel Marquez. I now stand before you as the number one lightweight contender in the world. Marquez chose a different path and maybe to forfeit his legacy by taking a fight against Floyd Mayweather. Beware, Thunderstorm in the Horizon

Looks like we had to throw our shades, bikinis & sun blocks away and prepare our umbrellas, caps and jackets. Summer seems to be over and we had to welcome rainy season whether we like it or not. It’s good news for some of our fellow countrymen particularly to those in the provinces. It’s the time of the year where our crops need water. Several of our dams with decrease in water level during the hot season will be replenish. But for most of us, this is the time of the year that we had to prepare more. As a resident of Malabon for 30 years, seeing floods left and right is just part of our life. But floods accompanied by heavy rains means total disaster for lowly areas like us.

Today, I’ll just share several facts about typhoons that have hit our country and peep into the most notable tropical cyclones to enter the Philippine area of responsibility.

According to PAGASA, storms were categorized into four types based on their wind speed. First is the Tropical Depression with maximum sustained winds between 55 kms. per hour to 64 kms. per hour near it’s centre. Tropical Storms range from 65 to 119 kms. per hour. Typhoons achieve a maximum of 120 to 185 kms. per hour. The strongest is Super Typhoon with winds exceeding 185.

Based on Wikipedia, the most destructive typhoon ever to hit Philippines is Thelma in November of 1991. Death toll was estimated at 5,000- 8,000 people and damages amounting to P 1.045 B. In terms of damages and loss of property, typhoon Ruping had a resounding P10.846B recorded in just 5 days. Typhoon Amy stayed in the country for almost half month from December 6-19, 1951 killing the lives of 991 people, 2nd highest after Thelma.
Aside from typhoon strength, amount of rainfalls were also measured. The wettest tropical cyclone was the July 1911 cyclone which dropped over 1,168 millimetres of rainfall within a 24 hour period at Baguio City. Curiously, 5 of the top 10 wettest recorded tropical cyclones occurred in Benguet.

Some of the latest typhoons to devastate the archipelago were Milenyo and Durian. The latter triggered mudslides that killed at least 388 people. River of muds and volcanic ashes from Mayon volcano swamped houses in the region. Milenyo on the other hand, killed many people not only here in our country but also in Vietnam. 24 hours after Milenyo left the Philippines, only 18% of the whole nation had their water and electricity returned. Large numbers of offices and establishments have been forced to close down. Uprooted trees, fallen cable wires and billboards can be seen in the usual busy streets.

When I was young, I always wait for this time of the year. No classes, cold weather, good time to eat and watch television. But imagine those people living in depressed areas. Where spare tires replaced nails in their roofs. Where people sleep surrounded by flood water. Where children were sick after so much exposure to rain. That opened my eyes to the reality that not everybody is happy during this kind of calamity. In every family living comfortably in exclusive villages during this time, there are thousands of families suffering and even threatened to lose their houses. Fear, worry and anxiety are written all over their faces.

Just think of how lucky we are compared to these people. For many of us, there's no amount of rain fall can prevent us from window shopping and bar hopping. But for them, there's no amount of rain fall can duplicate the tears lost during this time of depression.

Kabayan back in the limelight!

Last Friday, during our weekly meeting at Kabayan Headquarters, our adviser Sgt. Lim relayed to us what happened in the meeting with new Northern Police District Director, Chief Superintendent Samuel Pagdilao. The former PNP Spokesman arranged a meeting with all the NGO’s of Camanava to discuss his plan of forming one solid team out of all the volunteer groups in Camanava. He also wants to issue uniform which is similar to what the PNP personnel are using, the blue shirt. That makes our Chairman wonder if the plan will push through since we all know the reason why PNP replaced their old uniform. But Pagdilao said that an I.D. will be given along with the proposed uniform. Coronel Pagdilao is so accommodating like all of the former officers who were assigned to handle the NPD top post. Bataoil, Druja and Tango were some of his colleagues whom we worked hand in hand for the past several years.

Before the meeting was adjourned, a surprised visitor came. No less than Col. Jack Ramos, Station Commander of PCP 4 in Malabon, asked for our assistance for their saturation drive on Sunday. He was so concern about the increase in crime rate involving minors. He even mentioned the law passed by Senator Francis Pangilinan pertaining to minors. The law states that if a 15 yrs.old or below commits a crime, he will be absolve. Confusing since curfew takes effect on 18 yrs. old and below.

The recent developments were again morale booster for the group where two high ranking officials recognized the existence of Kabayan, being the most active crime buster group in Camanava.

Rare Breed

Couple of days ago, U.S. President Barrack Obama and his Vice-President Joe Biden were on their way to Virginia when they decided to stop in a hamburger chain. Craving for burger, the two walked over the counter and lined up at the cashier. After ordering, they went straight on one table and waited to be called.

Do I really heard it right? Two of the most powerful people in the world acting like an ordinary individual? It may sound absurd but it’s a real thing. Maybe I’m just so attached to Filipino culture that this news caught me in awe.

Here in the Philippines, government officials were treated like they owned the country. From local to national officials, everybody wants a special kind of treatment. While driving on a busy road like Edsa or Roxas Boulevard, a loud siren will disturb you. Naturally you’ll give way knowing that “emergency” is approaching. But no, it’s a long convoy, escorting a plate number 8 car or any marked vehicle of the government.

During trips to different cities all over the country, President Gloria Arroyo was heavily guarded by PSG. Just last week, a cabinet secretary went to his province to visit his family. A throng of escort cars surround the officer from Manila to his destination. I remember watching on television the former President Joseph Estrada eating with the people at squatter area, like saying he’s one of them. His act earned him the adulation of the poor masses but in the contrary, his real motive was just to get the sympathy of them. There are also a lot of story about people who visit the office of our beloved Senators to ask for financial help but most of the times their secretary were the one talking with them. Worse, they always go home empty handed.

Obama and Biden are endangered species already. During campaign and election period, the candidates extend themselves to the people. But after elected, they distanced themselves and didn’t even bother to give back what the people deserve. But if you’re a Manny Pacquiao, that’s a different story.

Piece of Advise

What is respect? According to Webster Dictionary, it is something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or trait. In a simple term, respect is to treat people considerately.

Sometimes or most of the times, we tend to forget respecting other people. It varies in different forms like respecting his way of life, his religion preference, his knowledge and ideas and even his free time. Real respect is hard to attain. You go to office, spend 8 or 10 hours even without doing anything and you earn money. But to earn respect is a totally different story.

On a personal note, I started working in 1997 as a marshal (crew) in the first “play care center of the Philippines”, Kids at Work. There, I did everything my boss wants me to do. From mopping the floor, “washing “the comfort room and even worse cleaning the unpleasant “mess” of kids, name it and I’ll do it. That is beside the usual task assigned on me. But I considered those experiences as the foundation of my mindset in treating others. When I was promoted as the store supervisor, I always look at my subordinates as myself, when I was like them starting. During their free time, I always find time to converse with them to uplift their moral a notch higher. I never ask them to do me a favour without making “pasuyo”. Even up to now with my present work at Pagcor where I’m back as a rank and file employee, I always see to it that I will not hurt the feelings of my co-employees and even my superiors. Sad to say, some of our co-employees whom are just at par with your level were acting like they are the captain of the ship. Just learn how to co-exist more importantly with the people down there. Just always remind yourself where to stand. Small workers had egos too and if both prides collide, your office will turn into your personal battleground.

Lastly, it still boils down to how are you raise by your parents. But if you’re aware about this and didn’t act to overturn it, it’s now your fault. Respect doesn’t earn overnight. It’s something even money can’t buy and something you will get if you truly deserves it.

Salute to the King!

I just like to give a little of my precious time to pay tribute to somebody who made a big impact this year in the NBA. Lebron James was awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy for the monstrous season he had with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Aside from leading his team to its best ever finish in the regular season, King James was the only player this season to average 28.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 7.0 asp. He also registered his career high in field goal and free-throw percentage with 48.9% & 78.0% respectively. He also had the most free-throw shot made at 594. Likewise Bron led the league with the most number of triple-doubles this year with 7.

This space is not enough to glorify his greatness. It’s quite frightening to know he’s just on his 6th year in the NBA. There still a lot to achieve for this phenomenal kid who never played college basketball. After Michael Jordan, I’ve became an instant fan of Lebron James. No wonder, I patterned the name of my only son to him.

Congratulations! The throne is yours!

Just 2 Rounds for the Best Pound-for-Pound!

“London bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down!” This is the chant you will hear inside the dug-out of the newly crowned IBO junior welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao right after disposing Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton in MGM Grand Las Vegas yesterday. True to his monicker, Hatton was “hit” numerous times before referee Kenny Bayless stop the fight before the 2nd round ends.
It was one of the most spectacular knock-out ever recorded by Pacman, even better than the two Morales’ stoppage. His victory extended his winning streak to 10 dating back to 2005. Pacquiao also entered the record books by winning his 5th world title since started campaigning as a light flyweight in 1995.

I’ve watched the fight in pay-per-view at Casino-Pavilion with my wife and officemates. We arrived at around 10:00 a.m. about 3 more undercards before the Pacquiao fight. I have some doubts if Manny can really beat the Manchester kid. Doubt, not of his skills but the many “firsts” associated with this fight. It will be the first time that a male singer, Martin Nievera, was tapped by Team Pacquiao to sing our National Anthem. Second, Manny’s mother Dionisia will watch the encounter right at the venue and not in the Philippines (It was reported that she wasn’t present at the MGM Grand). It was also the first time that WWE superstar Batista will be part of Manny’s entourage since he was volunteering for Pacman, 2 years ago. It was also the first time that he will be campaigning at the 140 lbs. where the Briton was considered untouchable being undefeated in 45 fights in that division. Also, this is the first time Manny will go not for a WBC belt but for the less heralded IBO title.

His devastating victory not only earned him the Ring Magazine award nor maintained his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today but also cemented his name in the history of boxing. In the post-fight interview Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has this to say, “You’re seeing something that is developing. I really believed that when the full story was written, this man will be considered as the greatest fighter who ever lived”.

But where will Manny Pacquiao go after this? Does he still need to prove himself to the world? Is there any worthy opponent that could excite Manny to continue wearing his gloves? Is there any attractive pay-per-view match that could make Manny’s take bigger? Am I hearing the name Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

Ready to Meet Imeldific?

A month ago, Newsweek magazine came up with an article about the Greediest People in the World. Prominent figures like Genghis Khan, Charles Ponzi, Bernie Madoff, Imelda Marcos... wait. The former First Lady of our country? For the new generation, her inclusion to the shameful list is a shocker but for those who witnessed or somewhat had a knowledge of what Imelda Marcos is, the naming was just and proper.

The article was very timely for me since I’ve just bought a book written by Ricardo Manapat published in 1991 entitled “Some are smarter than others”. The book was actually the expanded & updated version of a 40-page pamphlet circulated under the same title in September of 1979. The piece talks about the history of Marcos’ crony capitalism and how privilege and wealth were created for a few individuals while pushing the majority of Filipino people to live in poverty. But for this purpose, we will just zero- in on Imelda Marcos’ activities as well as her extravagance to give justice on the article.

When Marcos became President in 1965, approximately 13.4 million Filipinos could not meet the minimum requirement for food, clothing and shelter. Several stories of how the Marcos regime treated poor Filipinos were documented. In 1972, His wife Imelda headed a cleanliness campaign to attract foreign tourists. They cleared squatter communities which according to them were an eye sore to those who passed this area. There was even a story of a woman who was beaten and died of heart attack after a protest on clearing operation by the government. Most of the families were forced to relocate to places without electricity, food and water. Many dies majority are children.

Imelda also built several hospitals like the Philippine Heart Center, Lung Center, Kidney Center to name a few. She also organized the Nutrition Center of the Philippines which received donations from foreign countries. These donations however were diverted to Imelda’s personal accounts in London and were later used to buy diamonds.

Since I’ve mentioned her penchant to collect diamonds, I will now tour you to Imelda’s insurmountable appetite for wealth and power.

According to partial documents retrieved after the First family left the country, Imelda and her family spent $ 68 million in the last 2 years of their reign. At least $ 11 million were allocated for clothes, paintings etc. In April 1983, Imelda spent $ 90,000 in one day buying antiques in Vigan, Ilocos. Also on a single day, Imelda purchased sheets worth $ 10,340 from New York. She also bought expensive perfume not by the ounce but by the gallon. The heavily publicized pairs of shoes were counted where the final figure was pegged at 2,800 pairs. It is known that Imelda owns a diamond-studded pair of shoes but this pair has disappeared.

She also had a personal bus with 14 armchairs, 2 beds, a kitchen and a bath. I will not go into details about their luxury cars, vessels and aircrafts. Just name it, they have it! Her family owned an approximately 50 residential houses. This does not include her mansion, estates and commercial buildings in foreign countries.
During her trips abroad, she usually instructed her London staff to withdraw $ 10 million for her “pocket money”. Imelda also collected artworks from Pablo Picasso to our very own Fernando Amorsolo. Her jewelry collection is one of the finest in the world. She was even labelled as the largest buyer of jewelry in the late 70’s. One of her priced possession is a necklace made of diamonds worth a staggering $ 16 million.

April 23, 2009, an exciting day for me because of 2 things. First, I had the opportunity to shy away a bit to my accustomed work and second it’s the birthday of my lovely wife! Several weeks before this day, I had a problem not knowing what gift I could give her. First, she wants to have a digital camera. I painstakingly canvassed for the camera that will best suit her taste. After deciding on one brand, she then taught of having a LCD television, 32”, as her minimum requirement. That’s more than double (price) of the digital camera I planned to buy. Alright, I went around the mall again and I found one worth just, P23, 000+. Bingo! Now my problem has been solved! But upon returning home, she made another bold move. She now wants to put tiles on the flooring of our living room! So that’s it! So much for the headache, “the gift”, has given me.

At around 3:00 p.m. on the day of her b-day, we checked- in on a hotel, located in downtown Manila. We ate a lot and bought my wife a new design of Havaianas slippers. We also bought several stuffs for our kids. We headed back to the hotel and ate some snacks. We called it a day quite early, understandably, since all of us are tired of all the brouhaha we did the whole day. We woke up at around 7:30 in the morning. We had our breakfast, silogs, pancakes etc., and took our morning shower. We checked-out early because we still need to buy the tiles along Edsa. We consumed 3 hours picking the right color that will best describe our home motif. At night, my sexy wife Jerdie and I, drink 2 bottles of Red Horse mucho. Two beers plus home-made sisig and isaw is more than enough for us non-drinkers. We discussed a lot of things like our past, how we met, how we defied several odds along the way and how we slowly fulfill our dreams for our family. At 11:00 p.m. we decided to call it quits. The next scene is what I’ve been waiting for! I need to close the door now. It’s a private thing. Hope you understand.

NBA Play-offs, Where Amazing Happen!

After 82 grueling games in the regular season, we are now entering the next phase of the 2008-’09 NBA season. After the smoke was cleared, only 16 teams remain standing out of the 30 participating ballclubs. This is the door to the promise land. This is the NBA PLAYOFFS!

We’ll now analyze the different pairings from the two different Conferences and we’ll breakdown each teams’ strengths and weaknesses and come up with a projected finish.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

1 Cleveland vs. 8 Detroit

This is indeed the year of King James. Lebron guided the Cavs to its franchise best finish at 66-16 and the leagues second all-time best at home with 39-2. The Cavaliers is Lebron’s team, but other players are stepping in. Mo Williams is the 2nd best scorer of the team at 17.8 ppg. while shooting a respectable 43% from beyond the arc. The big men average 20 rebounds a night and should be the main concern of the Pistons. Meanwhile, one of Detroit’s bright spots is its scoring. At least 5 players are scoring in double figures led by Rip Hamilton. But the question is who’ll stop Lebron? Prince must keep an eye on him everywhere just to slow down Brons production. Predicted finish, Cleveland 4-1

2 Boston vs. 7 Chicago

It seems the play-offs is now over for the defending champs. Kevin Garnett’s shoe is too big to fill and that could pose a major problem for the C eltics. Kendrick Perkins, Leon Powe and Glen Davis should re-assert their might with the absence of the Big Ticket. Pierce will still be the anchor while Allen and Rondo are expected to extend their helping hand. The Bulls however finished the regular season at 41-41 record. More worse, they played below 50 % at road. But the entrance of Salmons and Miller energize the slumping Bulls. Plus the active play of rookie sensation Derrick Rose, the Bulls are still poise to dethrone the Celtics right here in the first round. Predicted finish; Boston 4-3

3 Orlando vs. 6 Philadelphia

The league premier big man Dwight Howard will take center stage but the supporting cast is a bit questionable. Hedo Turkoglu is out with a sprained ankle while Jameer Nelson already missed 40 games. With this, Rashard Lewis and Rafer Alston might feel the pressure to deliver down the line. The Sixers on the other hand, surprise many by advancing to the play-offs even without new addition Elton Brand. Igoudala spearhead the young core of the Sixers with Andre Miller and Thaddeus Young providing extra help. The biggest question is, can Dalembert hold his own against Superman? The answer is a big NO. Predicted finish; Orlando 4-1

4 Atlanta vs. 5 Miami

The Hawks started the season strong but faltered along the way. That led to the acquisition of veteran pointguard Mike Bibby. Joe Johnson will continue to torch the net with the help coming from guys like Al Horford and Josh Smith. The leagues leading scorer Dwayne Wade is expected to carry the Heat. But the real key is how his teammates especially Haslem, Beasley and Moon could relieve the pressure off the shoulders of D-Wade. If these guys can be a threat in offense, double teams on Wade will be lessen. This series will be close and anything can happen. Predicted finish; Miami 4-3

WESTERN CONFERENCE
1 L.A. Lakers vs. 8 Utah

Reigning league MVP Kobe Bryant is expected to lead the Lakers to the next round what with a bunch of dependable teammates lurking over. Gasol, Odom and Bynum are all averaging almost 10 rebounds a night. Veteran guard Fisher is still reliable in cluth. More importantly, Phil Jackson doesn’t loss his Zen touch on the team. If theres one thing going the way of the Jazz, it’s their all-time record against the Lakers. The Jazz enjoyed an n 11-5 playoffs record though they never met in the first round before. Deron Williams will quarterback the team while Boozer, Okur and Kirilenko will give the Lakers trio a run for their money. Add to the mix their reliable reserves like Millsap and Brewer and the match-up become more intriguing than ever. Predicted finish; Los Angeles 4-2

2 Denver vs. 7 New Orleans

The Nuggets unexpectedly finish the regular season at 2nd place over-all (West). Many still doubt their game but don’t tell that to Chauncey Billups. The savvy guard was the anchor of the champion team Detroit Pistons when he was still playing at the Palace. His stocks went higher teaming up with superstar Carmelo Anthon y, the teams leading scorer at 22.8 clip. But for me the two biggest factors are the improved plays of sixth man J.R. Smith and big man at the middle Nene. But the biggest hurdle is a little man named Chris Paul. NBA’s no.1 pointguard continue to dazzle the fans with his uncanny leadership of the Hornets. New Orleans may not be as successful as last year but the entrance of tested veteran James Posey and the resigning of Tyson Chandler will still make the match-up more exciting. Predicted finish; Denver 4-3

3 San Antonio vs. 6 Dallas

It’s again a battle of Texas teams. San Antonio had the home court advantage against the Mavs but their home record is not as sweet as ever. Add to the fact that they finished the season just 4 games above the Mavericks. Making the matter more worse is the absence wingman Manu Ginobili. The load becomes heavier now on the shoulders of Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. Dallas on the other hand, finished quite strong in the regular season winning 7 of their last 10 games. Thanks to former league MVP Dirk Nowitzki, who is again the focus of defense by the Spurs. But don’t forget Jason Terry and Josh Howard who can put on a show if the need arises. But then again, it’s a battle between two of the best forwards in the NBA. Predicted finish; Dallas 4-3

4 Portland vs. 5 Houston

Two weeks going to the final stretch of the regular season, the two occupied the reverse position. But the Blazers had a huge 6 game winning streak while the Rockets lost their last game. Brandon Roy is again on the spotlight with the help coming from everywhere. LaMarcus Aldridge, dubbed as the next franchise player, must bring his A-game into the play-offs war. Outlaw, Batum and Pryzibilla will have hands full containing the Great Wall. But the biggest surprise must come from the former no.1 pick Greg Oden. Without Tracy McGrady, the Rockets need the production of Ron Artest, the teams’ resident slinger. But the real deal will be Yao Ming. The other best center in the NBA, has become more offense oriented without sacrificing his defense. Predicted finish; Houston 4-2

Titanic Lives On!

On the night of April 14, 1912, wireless operator Philips was busy sending passenger’s messages to Cape Race, Newfoundland, where they could be relayed to friends and relatives. He received a sixth ice warning but didn’t realize how close Titanic was to the position of the warning. It never reached Captain Smith or any officer on the bridge.

At 11:40, a lookout in the crows nest spotted an iceberg dead ahead. He notified the bridge and First Officer Murdoch ordered the ship turned hard to port. He signaled the engine room to reverse direction, full astern. The ship turned slightly, but it was much too large, moving much too fast, and the iceberg was much too close. 37 seconds later, the greatest maritime disaster in history began.

This is how I can summarize the events that took place on that fateful night exactly ninety seven years ago.
The story was relatively new for me until I’ve watched the film “Titanic” starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet. My main concern is just to watch how the massive Titanic would plunge into the icy water. But after seeing the movie, it tickled my imagination and instantly became a fan. I have collected several news clippings, books, pictures, a replica of the ship, vhs tapes and cd’s, posters and absolutely anything that talks about the Titanic.

So much have been said about the facts leading to the event. What I would try to impart are some of the least known things that were not highlighted but plays a vital role to the whole event. Let’s submerge to the icy water and explore the wreck of the Titanic;

1. In 1898, a book called Futility, telling how the largest ship in the world “Titan”, sank in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg, killing thousands. 14 years later, Titanic would suffer the same fate.

2. Just how big Titanic is? She is 852 ½ feet long, that’s about a sixth of a mile, enough to extend to four streets. 175 feet high from keel to the top of the funnels and 52,310 tons displacement, the weight of the water that had to move out when she sits on it.

3. Titanic’s passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world during that era. The wealthiest was Col. John Jacob Astor. When his body was pulled out of the water, he had a gold watch, gold & diamond cufflinks, 225 pounds in English paper money, $2,440 in American bills, 5 pounds in gold & a gold pencil.

4. Accounts have it that the night was uncommonly clear and dark. The stars were so bright that one officer mistook the planet Jupiter (then rising just above the horizon) for a steamship light. The sea was also flat like glass, said many survivors, which makes it more difficult to spot iceberg.

5. The lookouts had no binoculars. Fleet and Lee used only their naked eye as binoculars were apparently misplaced. Fleet did not see the iceberg until it was a mere 500 yards or 37 seconds from impact.

6. Some Titanic mysteries have religious significance. One famous legend concerns about the number printed under the ships name: 3909 04. When looked at the mirror, the number spells out the words, “NO POPE”. Some have felt that this anti-Catholic sentiment has something to do with the disaster.

7. A native of Ohio, Doris Williams is always been afraid of ships and oceans. In 1960, Doris consulted a spiritual advisor about her strange phobia. The advisor hypnotized her but wasn’t able to find any pertinent childhood memories, so he’d thought to check back further. Sure enough, it was revealed that Doris had been reincarnated. In her previous life she was a man named Blackwell, a passenger who perished on board the Titanic! In a research, there was in fact a Stephen Blackwell who was lost in Titanic. Doris even revealed Blackwell’s address while under hypnosis. Dori’s case created a stir among Titanic fans as well as among psychic phenomena buffs.

8. Now that the wrecks true position is known, thanks to the ambitious expedition mounted by Dr. Robert Ballard, its ownership becomes an issue. It lies within the offshore waters claimed by Canada, a claim not recognized by the United States.

Titanic is truly a legend. Her story continue to delight me specially the mysteries that surrounds her. Today, as we remember that night of heroism, terror and tragedy, we must not forget the lives that were lost. All of the passengers in steerage section were lost, a classic symbol of rich against the poor. Sadly, that inequality continues to hound us up to this moment. Her story changes not only the maritime industry but also changes the course of history.

Sa aking pagmumuni-muni nitong mga nakakaraang araw, sa paghahanap ng materyales na mailalathala dito sa aking blog, ay sumagi sa aking isipan ang aking nakaraan. Nakaraang puno ng di- makakalimutang mga pangyayari sa aking buhay. Nakaraang batbat ng kalokohan. Nakaraang tigib ng luha at tuwa. Siguro nga ay napapanahon na ito'y muling sariwain ngayong panahon ng kuwaresma (anong konek?). Samahan mo ako sa pagbuklat ng pahina ng aking buhay at nawa'y makapagbigay ng munting kasiyahan(malamang), kaalaman(depende) at aral(meron ba?).

* ASO - ayon sa kwento ng aking mga magulang, ako'y isinugod sa pagamutan ng MaryJohnston sa Tondo dahil sa di mapigilang pagtaas ng lagnat. Ilang araw din akong naglagi sa ospital na iyon ngunit hindi pa rin mapawi ang aking karamdaman. Naisipan ng aking mga magulang na magtungo sa simbahan ng Tondo at doo'y nangako na gumaling lang ako ay magiging panata ko na magsimba doon tuwing aking kaarawan o pista ng Sto.Nino. Agad naman akong gumaling ngunit hindi dahil sa gamot kundi sa pagtawas sa akin na natuklasang ako daw ay natakot sa aso!

* SANTA CLAUS - matagal din akong naloko na totoo si Santa Claus. Marami rami din akong nakaaway sa pakikipagtalo tungkol sa kanya. Sabi ko, lahat ng hinihiling ko ay sa kanya ko lang sinasabi. Natigil lamang ako ng makita ko si Daddy na umakyat ng bubong at may inilalagay sa aking medyas.

* SUPERMAN - Kauna-unahang pelikulang napanood ko sa sinehan. Naaalala ko pa na hindi kami naupo ng tita ko kundi nakatayo kami malapit sa pinto dahil takot daw ako sa dilim.

* MENUDO - Unang hinangaan kong grupo. Katunayan ay mayroon pa akong laminated posters nila (original group). Mayroon din akong plaka nila (yun pa uso non) na pinapatugtog ko tuwing umaga.

* SGT. AT ARMS - Ito na yata ang nakatatak sa akin magmula nung grade 1 hanggang high school. Kunsabagay, hindi naman ako na nonominate bilang pangulo o pangalawang pangulo. Teka, nung grade 4 nga pala naging escort ako. Maiba naman.

* FOLK DANCE - Naging dancer din ako nung grade school. 2 taon akong sumayaw ng "Pandanggo sa Ilaw", "Maglalatik", "Tinikling" at kung anu ano pa. Si Ms. Shiela Popes nga pala ang madalas kong kapareha noon (special mention ka ha!).

* CHOIR - Versatile to brod. Naging miyembro rin ako ng choir mula grade school hanggang high school. Ang aming nag-iisanng mentor ay si Mr. Deleon na naging instrumento upang mahubog ang aming kaalaman sa pag-awit. Di ko rin mabilang ang tropeong aming naiuwi mula municipal hanggang division level.

* GEMELSAMISOKIVON - Aking ipakikilala ang mga taong naging bahagi ng aking buhay estudyante. roMEL & ramMEL, SAMuel, chrIS, lOKI, lex VON. Syempre yung GE ako yun.

* HORROR BOOTH - 1992 Foundation Day ng aming alma mater. We came up with an idea na magtayo ng horror booth para maiba naman sa traditional na Marriage booth at kung ano pa. Isang malaking classroom na inayusan namin upang maging horror house. Nag record pa kami ng backround music para mas lalong nakakatakot. As it turned out, talagang naging controversial ang aming booth hindi dahil sa haba ng pila kundi sa dami ng hinimatay na sinasabing nakakita daw talaga sila ng multo sa loob ng aming booth.

* BLOUSE - Kami ng kaibigan kong si Omel ay nakaupo sa ikalawang row sa likod ng mga babae. Dala ng kalokohan, ang babaeng nakaupo sa harapan namin ay aming pinagtripan. Nais naming malaman kung siya ay nagpapalit ng blouse araw-araw kaya't naisipan naming sulatan ng ballpen ang kanyang likuran. Presto! Kinabukasan ay nandun pa rin ang iginuhit naming ballpen! Sino sya? Abangan!

March Madness

Wheww! I don't know how will I start this. I'm still in the state of shock after all the happenings that transpired 3 days ago. Well, Saturday, March 21, was indeed a busy day not only for me but for the entire Pagcor family. BIDA March, a project of Chairman Genuino in cooperation with DepEd, was expected to post a new record for the most number of people participated on an Anti-drug campaign. This is definite but what we're gonna do is a big question mark. Days leading to the event, everybody were still in limbo as to what to do and where to go. It was then finalized that most of the girls will be assigned to take care of food distribution and others will be posted at the registration booths. Almost 80% of the boys composed the transport group.

Our group was tapped to dispatch vehicles from Valenzuela area. I woke up at around 5:30 a.m. since the site is closer to my homebase. AGA boys were divided into three. Notty, Jets, Dennis, Rick, Lito, Jeff, Jun & Tolits were assigned in one area. Sev, Doc and myself tooked care of another school (sorry, it's name slipped in my mind at the moment). Boyet was left all alone to supervise Wawang Pulo Elementary school. Cutting the story short, we dispatched a total of 75 buses and 18 jeepneys carrying an estimated 60 persons each (kids & adults) for bus and an average of 14 per jeepney. We have successfully done our part but what were not prepared for are the events that would follow.

The original plan is that the kids would be dropped at CCP Complex and marched towards Luneta Grandstand. The vehicles would then proceed to Dubai (site of Bagong Nayong Filipino) to wait. After the event, several buses would fetched the kids and returned them to Dubai where their assigned vehicles waited for them. But everything turned out just a plan. Confusion on where to get the drivers payment surfaced. Without food and drinks, do we expect them to politely conversed with us? As temper escalated, many of Pagcorians decided to change their shirt to protect themselves against eering drivers. A colleague who was assigned at Tondo Elementary School needed to run as angry drivers tried to put a hand on him. Another was held "hostage" as drivers wanted him to stay and will only be freed once they got their due. Navotas team, majority of whom are my close friends, can't get out of Dubai as drivers decided to park their jeepneys in front of our Dubai office. Our very own Boyet,who at passed 11:00 p.m., was still circling around MOA helping kids find their other companions. Were just thankful that we've already left Dubai before both parties clashed.

It was indeed a unique experienced for us. It may be tiring & exhausting day but the element of laughter will always be there. Take it from the words of Doc, moments after learning that his son is also missing. "San ka? Magkita tayo. Nakikita mo ba yung dyip?

The Vienna Invasion

Our day at the office last March 13, friday, started on a wrong foot with Mr. Severino Lubigan Jr. angrily, shouted at me. Still thinking about the probable cause of his sudden outburst, I decided to distanced myself, and gave him a moment of self realization. On the other corner is Cookie having some problem in the room reservation. Minutes later, comes Notty. Relayed about the room woes, he expressed his disgusts talking with Sir Boni. On the other side is Jun Sarin explaining why he didn't set-up the training room A, which I later found out the reason why Mr. Lubigan is flaring! Mr. Calamba, upon sizing up the situation decided to attend the program of Mr. Rodriguez, our consultant. Forget about all this negative stuffs. Lets just relax a bit because this is just a prelude to a better evening ahead of us. Fast forward. 1900H. The 14 souls(me,notty,dennis,jun,sev,g.i,boni,elaine,didith,tekla,liza,thez,jane & julie)started to hit the streets. 30 minutes later, were now in front of the famous chicken house in all of Manila, "Vienna". Arriving ahead of us were Jeff & Rey (better half of Tekla, who'm I have doubts whether he could feel better after tonight). Foods were served. From tokwa't dila to chicken ass, everything that reached our table vanished in a winked of an eye. A cake surfaced intended for the birthday of Thess David & Julie Lorenzo. After Julie blew the cake, nobody dared to eat it. After picture taking, the girls decided to go home, except for Tekla & Jane. The topic now shifted to Rey. We told him that we arrived Tuesday after our stint at Pagcor Angeles. Rey said that Tekla cameback, Wednesday. That joke started it all.

It was indeed a great night for all of us. As usual, laughter filled the entire Vienna. The blowing of cake, Tekla's bowling motivation, LT And Ness look-a-like and AGA worst awards are just some of the funny topics that literally brought the house down. Of course we would like to thank the host and owner of Vienna, Mr. Bonifacio Hernandez for a warm treatment we received (plus the discount we got, kelan ang bayad?). It's already 1:00 a.m.the following day, when we signed off.

But wait, before I go, let me greet Paulo a "Happy, Happy Birthday!" That's the reason why Mam Dolly missed the night out.

Day of the Big J

As an avid Ginebra fanatic, it's uncanny for me to forget the date, March 8. Robert Jaworski, PBA's Living Legend, celebrated his 63rd birthday. I've been pre-occupied by a lot of things that this date slipped away from my senses. For those who were born only during the Daylight saving time era or worse to those people who were only introduced to PBB Housemates and Startruck Survivors, let's rewind father time, as I take you to a quick journey to one of the most popular personality in the country and one of the most colorful cager who ever wore a pair of sneakers.

Robert Salazar Jaworski's rise to stardom was not an overnight fairytale. He started his basketball career in University of the East under the tutelage of Legendary coach Virgilio Dalupan. He was a vital cog for the Red Warriors leading his team to 2 titles. A many time National Team member, "Jawo", as he was fondly called, was banned for playing basketball in 1971 with pal Big Boy Reynoso for punching a referee. But after 3 years, the two were reinstated due to immense public clamor. "The Big J", coined after the NBA's "The Big O", was already 29 years old when PBA saw it's birth in 1975. Playing alongside Ramon Fernandez at Toyota Comets, he began to carve his name and slowly rised into the leagues elites. In 1983,Toyota disbanded and management decided to give away their players. Jaworski disagreed and uttered the famous line "Ano kami, parang mga baboy na ibebenta por kilo"? He then signed, together with best friend Francis Arnaiz, with the Gilbey's Gin where his popularity blossomed. Changing the name to Ginebra in 1985, he became the first playing coach in the PBA. There, he converted the non believers to believers, proving time and again their "never-say-die" attitude, winning several championships with the Palanca franchise. As a testament to his immense contribution to the league, the PBA patterned its logo to him. In 1995, he made history by drafting son Dudut Jaworski in the Annual Draft making them the first father and son tandem in any sports history. In 1998, he ran for the Senatorial race, where he won, that forced him to retire from active basketball. In 1999, he left the game, but up to this date his famous jersey no.7 has not been officially retired.

His career in basketball is replete with intrigues, controversies and success. Love him or hate him, but he will forever be the Darling of the Crowd. Borrowing from his own statement made during the final years of his career " I can't imagine myself playing without them", pointing to the rafters where the Barangay Ginebra screamed their most famous chant "Jaworski!Jaworski!Jaworski!

I've been writing so much about Francis M. for the past several days, but there are several facts I want to share with you, that caught my attention. Called it a mere coincidence or just a product of creative imagination. Kiko was the 8th child of the late moviestars Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. He was diagnosed of blood cancer widely known as LEUKEMIA (spelled in 8 letters) last August, the 8th month, of 2008. At age 44 (if added will give us no.8),Francis M (also with 8 letters) left behind his 8 kids.

Probably thinking about the curse of the number 8, the Master Rapper, decided to play the spoilers role by accepting death before the 8th month, from the date the dreaded cancer was first found out, of his disease.

These are just plain observations and shouldn't be taken seriously. GOD Bless FrancisM! May he Rest in Peace!

A Day In The Life

Saturday, March 7, 2009, was a very busy day for me. Waking up at around 7:00 a.m. is just like an ordinary office day. But no. Today, is more of a combination of hard labor, expenses, grieve, patience, excitement & fatigue. I've started the long day delivering my airconditioning unit to the service center. Right after, i went to Banawe to buy two sets of brake pads for my Toyota Revo. Along the way, I had to buy 20 pieces of water galons for our purified water station. Aircon service was pegged at around P1, 200.00 , brake pads costs P 700.00 and water galons are worth P 2,600.00. P 4,500.00 for the first half of the day? Hope nothing follows. I need to replace the pads quickly co'z I need to catch the Eat Bulaga Tribute for Francis M at 12 noon. The show lasted for 3 hours with some of his close friends and colleagues sharing their unforgettable moments with "The Master Rapper".

There are some touching scenes like when Gary Valenciano shared his video of his concert circa 1990 titled "Major Impact", where he and Francis M performed on the same stage to the delight of the screaming fans at Philsports Arena, formerly known as Ultra. Gloc 9 was in tears singing "Lando", his most famous song where "Kiko" sang with him.

The finale where Tito, Vic & Joey performed their version of "Kaleidescope World". At around 4:30 p.m., My Family & I decided to go to Mall of Asia for some breather. There, I have to be patient circling around the mall with my wife & 3 kids. To lessen my load, I let my 2 kids play at the ice skating rink for an hour. After the fireworks display at the back side of the mall, we then proceeded to our dinner.

It took us just 30 minutes to finished our food since we're trying to catched the Eraserheads' "The Final Set" concert at the MOA grounds, beside IMAX theater. No, we don't have any tickets or pass to watch it inside the venue, rather, we stayed outside and just had a glimpse of the E-Heads performance at the four screens located at the top of the stage and another big screen at the right side of it. We do have a great time watching the concert and eating some snacks on top of the hood of our "owner type jeep". It was passed 11:00 p.m., that time the E-Heads were playing "Pare Ko", when we decided to pack up and go back home.

It was indeed a tiring but enjoyable day not only for me but for my entire family as well. A moment you can't exchange for money, though you need some for this.

Coldest Summer Night

I was taking my lunch break when i heard the news that Francis M died. I can't believe at first but knowing his condition it is probably what the Lord Almighty wants to happen. "The Master Rapper" succumb to cancer, leukemia, the same disease who tooked away my mother from us almost 2 decades ago. Today is exactly one day before Eraserheads "The Final Set" concert at SM Mall of Asia grounds. It is believed that Francis M will have a surprise number with E-Heads frontman Ely Buendia. I hope this will not have any effect on the E-Heads concert.

I still remember Francis M during his bagets days. But for me, he will be remembered most for his songs that touches our lives. He was the God of Rap in the Philippines. He put our country into the map of music scene. He elevates underground rap artists into the mainstream. He is a class of his own.

Who can forget his songs. From "Mga Kababayan", "Man From Manila", "Ito Ang Gusto Ko" to "Kaleidescope World", "Nilamon Ng Sistema" and even his version of "Superproxy". I've bought his debut album in late-80's, in a cassette tape mode. My personal favorites were "Mga Praning", "Cold Summer Nights" & "Kaleidescope World".

He will be truly missed, but his legacy will forever be remembered!
